I find myself falling asleep almost every time I sit fown to listen to an album. I rarely make it through an entire album, which is truly a shame. So, I was wondering what your opinions are on the best way to listen to music; which would require doing something to keep oneself from falling asleep, but at the same time, being able to focus almost entirely on the music.

Listen to it when your doing anything.... Some people prefer T.V. as a background noise but I say GIVE THE PEOPLE SOUL! I usually get home from work...throw 5 CD's in and press random... I just do whatever it is I have to do, be it writing, cleaning(rare)or cooking and enjoy the tunes as I'm doing so. The only time I sit and listen to music is either when I'm depressed or when I need to pay attention to the lyrics.

For me, it is public transportation. Going and coming to school every day takes about an hour in total, so I have time to listen to about one and a half albums daily on the bus. I'm usually able to devote all of my attention to the music and it helps turn what might be a mundane ride into an exciting one.

Oh yes, bus rides are a good time to listen to music. Also when your walking around the mall (if you have to). I hate malls to begin with, but sometimes you just can't avoid them. So I take my Walkman and try not to make eye contact with any unsavory characters.
I'm usually the DJ when my friends and I go out ridin in the car...most of them have no taste so they rely on me to provide it. Music is a huge part of my life. I don't understand how some people can sit in a car and not realize the radio is even off...

I had some of the best moments of my life listening music on public transports. As you're doing nothing, you can focus all your attention on music.

Yep, I agree. Fond memories of almost falling asleep on the train to Pet Sounds.

I love listening in the car.

In bed, too. Layin' above the covers w/the lights out.

Kinda freaked my wife out the other night, though. Lights out and in bed listening to "Bea Arthur On Broadway"

(It's great, BTW!)

Train journeys and music work pretty well together, I listen to music everywhere I go, I'm annoyed if it isn't on. Loud would be my best suggestion for not falling asleep however.

I tend to listen to CDs while on public transportation so I'll stay awake. I guess that might not work for Adrian, though.

When I'm driving I always always listen to music and if I know the lyrics I always sing along. If I don't know the lyrics, I pretend like I do and that works too.

Also when I'm on the computer I listen to music through my Sony MDR-V600 headphones. That way I hear things in the music I never hear in my car and it almost makes it fresh even if the album is old. My car speakers ain't that great.

Wow, and you don't find regular radio music torture?

I mean, NPR is cool. That's about the extent of my radio listening.

My favourite ways are loud, on my walkman on my way to work in the mornings - takes me about an hour between the walking and the bus - really sets the mood for the day. Road trips require entire new mix cds to be made.

At home I've just land up sparking one up (oh yes, you have the right idea Chip Away Boy) while at my kitchen table and kicking back while listening to whatever happens to be my latest musical obsession. The perfect way to unwind after a long stressful day.

I always play music when I'm driving. The best way to listen to music is at home though. NimrodsSon, I sometimes find staying awake difficult too.

Public Transit, or Walking, Over Dinner, or at a small gathering (if you dont feel like listening to the conversation, you can just tune in to the music).....but I enjoy just sitting in a comfortable chair with headphones.....

but the absolute best way is Live Music (the feeling of being in front of a great band always reaffirms my love for music)

I´ve got a pretty good playback in my head so whenever suits, really. Right now it´s Old Folks At Home by Mills Brothers.

I find that coming home unreasonably drunk, putting on something at an unreasonably high volume and passing out on the floor after the second song works really well...especially if the CD is on repeat.

I prefer headphones while surfing the net or watching sports, but, like others I ALWAYS have a song in my head. Its impossible for me to avoid.

I said loud way up the top there you know, I got it going on me!

By the way, Nicole and Mikey, although mostly the sweet surfer, thank you very much you pair! I had a lovely package waiting for me at home when I got back from my trip, I've been far too busy (sleeping) to listen to the CD's yet but tomorrow they will get my full attention. I couldn't e mail you because my gmail is stupid.
