Argh. I'm sick to death of the ever-growing trend to house CDs in flimsy cardboard sleeves rather than sturdy jewel cases. The first disc of my copy of FBF came totally scratched up, and the second disc is leaning that way as well, each time I remove it from the package. CDs need to stay firm, dammit, and they can't rub against something whenever you take them out. That's ridiculous.

It seems to me that itunes is a ridiculous way to buy FBF.

Yeah, it's sort of a collector's item more than an album, and I'm not really an MP3 collector.

As a proud buyer of vinyl and/or CD for over 25 years, I have resolved to NEVER pay for an MP3.

I think the packaging is very nice. I do like card sleeves and a few of my fav bands use it on a regular basis. It's very clean and artistic. Kinda works for the whole collectors item special release thing. Now I have to listen to it.

I don't like the way the CDs are stored in the cardboard sleeve, but I do think cardboard is less likely to break than a jewel case. The whole package takes up less space, too.

First thing I do when I get one of these abrasive sleeves is put the discs in a jewel case. Doesn't please me but I feel I have no choice.

First thing I do is rip the discs to m4a or FLAC for computer. Second is burn the discs onto good quality CD-R for portability. Then put "good" copy in my CD display rack and never use it.

I tried to wait for eMusic to come around with FBF, but they only offered two tracks. Then it was "Do I pay $12 at Amazon, get off my butt and go to the record store to pay $17, or sit here and click iTunes for $24?" I'm ashamed of my choice!

I don't like to buy mp3's off the internet. I feel like if I buy the cd outright, I get more of a deal because you actually get a jewel case and the artwork/booklet that it comes with. Maybe I'm in a small crowd of people who actually enjoy looking at the booklets. It's a package deal. You get more than music. You get entertainment.

Digipacks just feel classier than a plastic case to me, I like it. I generally take pretty good care of my cd's though so I'm not worried about it getting broken.

I bought mine at the closest local record store once I saw that there was no "volume/album" discount on iTunes, and immediately after buying it, opened it and saw one of the discs was scratched VERY badly, like a nail across it. I think the itunes thing is good if you didn't want the whole thing... but this isn't one of those things where you "find your favorite song by listening to snipets," so not appropriate for a release of this nature that seems directed at uberfans.

I like the look and feel of the packaging, or at least don't mind, and thought it seemed appropriate for a production such as this, but have to agree seems a bit abrasive. Luckily, after buying, I encoded and enjoy it mainly on my iPod and so never take the CD out of the case now.... so really I like it more than it bothers me.

What was this about FBF being $24 on iTunes Music Store? I'm looking at it right now and it's $15.99.

Make a backup copy with the PC/laptop. For some reason the laser lens on pc units are better than regular stereos. So copy the album(s) to your hardrive using the best possible audio quality you can; go for at least, at least 192 (Apple is by default 128, whichsucks, MP4/AAC bullshit or not), CD's are 1400+.

Then like somebody already said, burn yourself copies for everyday use on CDR.

I know it is a lot of work, when the case of a Cd should be "protective" in th efirst place, but hey...

I'm sorry, what is it that sucks about the AAC audio codec at 128? I'm not an audiophile myself, but all the stuff I've either ripped or bought at 128 in AAC format has sounded fine to me, and I can't personally distinguish between them and MP3's at 192 (again, I'm not an audiophile, but I'm not sure that AAC is bullshit)

sorry if this has been posted before, i didnt feel like reading the whole thread BUT!

not only am i not angry about the packaging.... im actually really glad they put it together in such a way because: im sure that its cheaper to package it with the cardboard junk so thats probably why the price was so low for a double disc. see, im still in highschool...i dont really have a steady income.... i appreciated the few bucks it saved me!

also, i put them on my iPod so i dont have to take the discs in and out a lot. i do feel for you though. scratched cds are so depressing.

We've had this album in rotation at my radio station for a few months now and both discs still play fine. If a few dozen college kids can toss this around every day, I don't think the packaging is much of a problem.

A bit off topic but while i don't mind paper/cardboard -sleeves a la old LPs- the designers and manufactureres sometimes eff up. I just flipped over my copy of Neil Young's Mirrorball and voila: it has all these scratches that i know my old players are going to hate and be skipping on like there is no tomorrow.

The thing is made of very heavy (even "fuzzy") cardboard, like brown, package grade stuff, and any bit of dirt that sticks to it grinds against the disc when getting it in or out of the sleeve.

Meh.

And then there is the issue of CD-rot...

"CD rot" may not be true ( http://home.pacific.net.sg/~nawin/faq.htm ). However, most everything rots. We, ourselves, will most likey rot before our Frank Black CDs

On a brighter note, the FrankBlackFrancis packaging is nice! I love it!

Yes, Neil Young's Mirrorball CD probably has the worst (in terms of how fatal it is to the CD inside) packaging I've ever run across. I don't know what they were thinking.

Personally, I'm in favor of packaging similar to the Frank Black Francis set. It feels good and it stands out on a shelf. My FBF CDs haven't become scratched by it, but some here obviously haven't had such luck. Ideally, in a package like FBF or Mirrorball, the CDs would have their own little paper/plastic inner sleeves (just like the inner dustsleeve with a vinyl record), though. Hopefully, this becomes the norm someday.

A great example of this is the double CD version of Sloan's One Chord to Another. The package is all paper, somewhat similar to FBF, but the two CDs have their own individual printed inner sleeves.

my problem with it is that its too wide to fit in my old-timey CD rack. I mean, maybe nobody uses those horizontal CD-holders anymore, and I don't even think they make 'em anymore (I usually nab them off the curb when I see someone toss one!) but its still forcing me to keep FBF away from my other FB CDs.
