Hey, how about it? Maybe if you asked for date of birth at registration,t hen whens its someones b day, it would come up at the bottom, automatically, with the rest of the details, such who last posted and newest members?
Come on, you gotta listen to ONE of my suggestions!!! you know you want to...

LOL... I'll see it'd be a pretty huge addition to the database even though it doesn't sound like it. And with 5000 members, there'd be a whole schwack of birthdays on any given day. 14, if things averaged out perfectly. But it doesn't, so some days maybe 5, other days as many as 40. And then we'd have a million birthday threads and people would be left out and...
Well, what do you guys think? If people really want this, it could be looked into.

Well, first, I guess not everyone would fill in the date of birth in the registration page, so out of 5000 members you would only have perhaps 1000 who would give their birth date. And then, you could simply state that birthday threads are no longer allowed, just like the 3/4/5 kitties threads; people would send private messages if they want.
I say Mel's idea is a good one (at last! :)). Unless you can't implement it before Nov. 28th (hint hint), in which case it would become useless. :)

Yes, this would have to be implemeted before Novemebr the 18th. Other wise it sucks, and I will bring it all down from the inside! mwahaha
And what do you mean 'at last'?? You cheeky monkey...

a lot of current forum boards, like vbulletin 3, have features like this, and MANY MANY other convenient stuff to make the whole experience of using a forum much more enjoyable. eg. ability to send private messages, join clubs, arcades to play games in, seeing who's online, "similar threads" links at the bottom of threads, etc. etc.
i still don't know why, with 5000 members, we still have this shit out of date thing.

An embedded chat client would be cool, but I'm happy with the level of communication available here. It gives the forum a bit more focus.
Hey, we actually have 5868 members.
No idea how many of those are someone's multiple personalities though.
Re the birthday alerts, I think it's kinda sweet the way it is now, where it naturally evolves from forum sentiment, and where people can kind of decide for themselves if they want it to be broadcast to the forum. If the birthday is published, then it just becomes ho-hum automatic and kinda dehumanized, and birthday people could feel hurt if no one says anything to them. Just my thoughts FWIW.
I'd rather not have mine involved in the alerts. I like personal things about me like that getting buried in threads. I feel too exposed otherwise. I have to go now. They're watching me. |

I love Snitz. PHPbb annoys me in the extreme (and I'm not ragging on PM, they've gone well beyond what the stock version is capable of... as well, I have a small PHPbb forum that I run and I'd still use Snitz if I were running ASP/Windows). vBulletin I've not encountered to be fair. But in any event, we're not switching forum software now! :)
A lot of those features we could probably implement. I never liked the private message feature but am not wildly opposed to it. Clubs I am. The arcade is interesting, online games used to be my fave part of BBSing.

http://www.ninten.com/f/index.php? - an example of vb. it's a little different and takes getting used to, but everything is set out nicely and it has a wealth of features.
is there not a more up to date snitz though? i know that some more sophisticated forums can cost money... but to be fair it doesn't look like we're getting any more monthly prizes and exclusive information as part of friends of frankblack.net! |

There are more monthly prizes to come, Dave is trying to swing a cool prize for October/November and is also training for a big velodromatic event, so he hasn't gotten around to Sept. Otherwise, it continues to be more singles.
There may be a more up to date Snitz. Worth looking at.
If anyone can find some ASP/SQL games, I was talking with Dave about this and we'd love to implement some sotr of multiplayer games, like the old BBS games, Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD), etc.
I'll look at that forum later.

Not to interrupt a constructive discussion, but I just wanna say how much I appreciate your use of the term "schwack." It is a Canadian, expression, I believe. Thanks again for writing that, it made me smile.
Oh, and a thumbs-up on the birthday suggestion. Go GypsyDeath!

prizes, what about a prize because I have the best birthday thread in the world anyway, you could call the prize a present if you liked, because in 21 days it's my birthday! I'm happy to share the thread with all those other birthdays though, see how caring I am

Ahem, I think I should get the prixe for making the thread, Tre!!!! Ah, hah, go on, we will share.
See, its a great idea. People dont have to include their birthday if they dont want to...totally optional.
I also like the idea of PMs, believe I have mentioned it before...but no one listened.

Heh, thanks Kathryn. I don't even notice using it... is it a Canadian term? I had no idea, actually.
We're looking into this birthday thing, though more pressing is getting set up a little better for the next chat.

I believe that I have only heard Canadians use that term, eh?
For what it's worth, I, for one, think the chat went fine and you guys did great work. But my view may be clouded by the fact that there is always room for improvement and by my own excitement that Frank was on the forum!

<innocently> Why, what access are you talking about? :)
To be fair, that was totally Frank's idea, we just tried to accomodate it on short order. We're hoping to set up another one down the road though that is a little more planned (though we'll never object to FB coming in unannounced to chat, comment, or even correct chords for ... say... Sing For Joy). Perhaps we can get Scotty or Rich to come by, too (not necessarily at the same time). Thinking to be done...
