Any of you State-siders going to this years Coachella Festival? Just got this from NME.com. Looks like an excellent line-up.
CALIFORNIA DREAMING
COLDPLAY, NINE INCH NAILS, NEW ORDER and WEEZER are set to top the bill at the sixth Californian COACHELLA FESTIVAL.
A host of British acts including Razorlight , Kasabian, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, Keane, Snow Patrol, The Chemical Brothers, Doves, Prodigy, Katie Melua, Roots Manuva, British Sea Power and Stereophonics will also play over the two-day event, which runs over the weekend of April 30-May 1. The festival will again take place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, a desert hot spot two hours outside of LA.
After festival bosses brought a reunited Stoogesto the line up in 2003 and helped get the Pixies back together for their 2004 show, Coachella 2005 will follow the tradition of bringing back reformed groups by hosting Bauhaus and Cocteau Twins in this year’s line-up.
"With the Cocteau Twins - I just kept persevering," festival promoter Paul Tollett told NME.COM. "The same guy who helped me with Pixies, helped me with that one. We just want to have all different types [of artists]. We’re not looking for bands that haven’t been around necessarily, just different types of music that add up."
The official Coachella line-up is :
Saturday April 30

To be fair though Kitty, you are a little behind on the music front.
By the way, did you notice there is a band called Miss Kitten there?

i agree, there's only a few i'd want to see. but not for 70 bucks, in 105 degree weather, smashed in a crowd of kids 2 miles in diameter, paying 4 dollars for 12oz waters.. and a beer garden that closes at 7pm.
damn kids

A beer garden that closes at 7!? That's not a festival! Once again it's up to us English to show you how it's done.
As for the bands, there are loads of upcoming ones in there that you will be raving about one day. But then I guess you are one of those 'I know what I like' types huh?

Wilco is playing too. which kind of cancels out a lot of the good bands.

HPM, don't listen to Floop and his blasphemy. I'm no huge Wilco fan, but I do enjoy their music. The way Floop describes them, you'd think they were the scum of the earth. And as far as country goes, I am by no means a real big country listener, so I don't know much about it, but I have heard Wilco genre-ized as "Alt-Country", whatever the hell that means.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

Wilco isn't alt-country anymore (at least to my ear). Their first album qualified as alt-country and maybe the second (Being There), but none of the rest. Son Volt (which was the other half of what use to be Uncle Tupelo) was country. And, floop is wrong about Wilco. |

there are a few good bands on the list...I've heard most of 'em on the 'net radio station I listen to at work. Rilo Kiley is great. i also dig the raveonettes, kasabian, and radio 4 but not for $100.
...but in no way can they touch LAST year's lineup.
and you all are SO right about the heat...it was DAMNED hot at that show but losin' 5 lbs of water in the 100+ heat on saturday to see the pixies was SO worth it! bliss. |

Not even the original Gang of Four line-up could make me go through a day at an outdoor festival, and I've been listening to their albums for 25 years.

I'd go even though I agree it's a weak line up (Katie Melua - dear lord what are they thinking!) purely to see Fantomas.
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A California Dreamin' on such a winter's day

Listen to Wilco, they are good, try "A ghost is born". And don't listen to what floop is saying.

I'm not gonna listen to what ANYONE is saying rita. The forum is full of stuck-in-the-past music 'fans'.
I mean, it's no Reading Festival, but it's not a bad line-up for an American one IMO. I think 12 bands that I want to see is a record for an American festival.

I used to be a "stuck-in-the-past music fan" myself, but I have to agree that I'm enjoying a lot of new bands and new music. And new musicians must have their opportunity too.

as much as a lineup like that entices me, i three am an old person who hates festivals like that. if i wanted to be surrounded by frat guys and pay $7 for a bottle of water i'd go to more NFL games. i even said that the Pixies are one of the last bands that i would go see where i had to deal with a venue the size of the Hammerstein. give me a small club where i can (sometimes) sit down and get a nice beer.

Yeah I have never understood why your festivals attract frat guy types. I suspose V Festival here is a bit like that, but it's the only one.

Coachella is usually a pretty good crowd of people . i've never seen a fight there or too many frat types.
i just don't enjoy watching a show in that kind of venue as much. when i saw Pixies last year, we were FAR from the stage.. and i was watching the monitors more than the actual stage. it's like, you may as well just rent the DVD.

Each to their own I guess, but I rarely hang around the main stages. I usually stay in the smaller tents, checking out the bands that will shape music's future. The ones on the main stage are usually crap like Good Charlotte.

OK, maybe ten bands I'd watch, but I wouldn't pay for it even if it was in London, I think.

Definitely not the festival type. It would need to be wine in boxes, though, with the plastic lining taken out and smuggled down your trousers.
The closest thing to a festival I've done was either Deconstruction (punk festival a few years ago in London - I managed to blister my hand on a cigarette and see a bunch of bad bands, both on the same day) or Red Hot Chili Peppers in a field last summer. I don't really approve.

Hey have you ever been to The Camden Crawl? The line-up looks excellent this year, AND it's on my brithday. Unfortunately that means it's a Thursday so I may struggle to convince friends to go.

Here you go. You can buy tickets from most online box offices, but also from the Rough Trade Records in person (I know you like it there).
