The big thing from Pistolero for me. Once yielded for the song during the tour 99... Frank looked at me like I was saying something funny... He did not play it... Maybe I just did not prounounce it well...

Sun she burns mean and big I think I’ll go to cafe noir Big screen turns me on I’m gonna be your western star How hard can it be? I get my freon bingo inside your cool soft sarong Rolling on the moquette inside a cul-de-sac kampong How hard can it be? How hard can it be when you’re a western star? Shining and free don’t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? I said now how hard can it be? She’s so sentimental she’s got my picture in her head The tool-man is in her dreams I was lifted when she said how hard can it be? And now he’s headed skyward standing up on piles of plywood And all he thinks about is how he looks like Heroes-period Bowie And his figure blocks the light And he takes away the night And he’s dancing to the new bolero You soy un pistolero I’m not shakin’ in my boots I’m ruler of this moon boy so if you move I shoots How hard can it be?

One thing I like about both "Western Star" and "So Hard To Make Things Out" is how they have a lot of different parts to them, instead of sounding the same all the way through. I think a lot of the songs on Pistolero suffer from sounding so similar to each other, but WS, SHTMTO, "Billy Radcliffe," "Skeleton Man," and "I Think I'm Starting To Lose It" are all great.
I was all out of luck, like a duck that died. I was all out of juice, like a moose denied. |

If I were to pick a song to prove that the genre of "Rock & Roll" still exists amid all the shitty shit "New Rock" it would have to be Western Star. It's unadulterated rockin' in its purist form as far as I am concerned. I have felt this way since I first heard the song/album.

I hardly listen to Pistolero anymore, but this thread made me want to re-listen to it once more. And even though I still find the 'album' inconsistent, I really found myself missing the more rocking side of Frank. Songs like 'Tiny heart', 'Western Star', 'I love your brain', 'Billy Radcliff' or 'So.bay' have so much energy in them, damn it, I need to hear that again. And even though I never really was a fan of Rich Gilbert's guitar work, most of that chaotic mess he does really adds to these songs. 'Tiny heart' and 'I want rock & roll' especially, are freakin' awesome. And I wonder if 'I think I'm starting to lose it' would have been in Surfer Rosa's tracklist, if it wouldn't be considered a classic, like 'Broken Face' or 'Something against you'. How can one not get goosebumps when Frank screams "I think I'm starting to looooooose it, I think I'm starting to looooooose it..." Maybe that's why I really hope to hear a new Pixies album. That'll have to be a rockin album, right? I wouldn't mind an album worth of waltzes, though. |

It's a Friday, people have things to do, work to wrap up, weekend plans to kick off. But let us take a moment on this busy day to note how fucking cool McDave's little mews are at the end of Western Star. They just cap off that most amazing song. All hail the Catholics!

Chip Away, I too have a soft spot for it (and Holiday Son, I fully agree it's the best song on Pistolero). I love singing and playing this on guitar!
BTW, love that kitten, fbc-show that to Oliver Stone! :D |

Most assuredly.
And Velvety, I whole-heartedly agree with you about "I Think I'm Starting To Lose It." Imagine if in the chorus, it was Kim singing that backup....it would sound stellar.
Frank - rerecord that song for the new pixies cd, PLEASE! |

Does anyone not like the mews? When I first heard them, I thought they were really annoying and totaly out of place. The second time I didn't mind as much, for I knew they were coming, and I prepared myself. |

The mews give more personality to an already stellar song. I love doing shit like that when I'm playing a song with my band, it's going great and it gets you in that playful mood to do something like that. |

I once complimented McDave on the mews, and called them "the mews," and he blushed. Highlight of my life.
