An old(er) hardcore/punk/rock/whatever band from my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
I just wanted to share this link to some free mp3s with y'all. One of em is a previously unreleased song (Breathing Machine). This album has been remastered and so far it sounds great to these ears.

Well, I was planning on going to see them at the Irving Plaza, but then I forgot to purchase tickets, and now I believe they have sold out. Damn, just when I was starting to get Spiderland. Apl, do you know if this reunion tour will be the last we hear of Slint? Touring-wise that is.
Edit: After typing that, I checked the Ticketmaster site, and to my surprise, tickets are still on sale. Looks like I just have to find someone to go with me, and I'm in. Thanks so much for reminding me.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

This is the only tour, after this it's done. They never had a chance to tour much, so this is kinda to wrap things up and say thanks.

Slint returns with sweet alchemy in full bloom

If the roof had caved in on the Brown Theatre Tuesday night, the past, present and future of Louisville's underground music scene would have been wiped out instantly, leaving blues bands and folkies to pick through the debris.
The occasion was the return of Slint, the Louisville band that helped map the course of independent rock music after the rise and fall of punk. Tuesday was the first show of the band's brief reunion tour, and the audience was filled with a significant portion of the city's music scene, some of whom owe their careers to Slint.
The energy in the room was palpable. After more than a decade away, Slint has grown into an icon, and it was impossible to know if the band that started a revolution, however small, could rise above expectations and dozens of imitators.
But as the last note of the final song, "Good Morning, Captain," faded, there wasn't much doubt. Whatever sweet alchemy occurs when Britt Walford, David Pajo and Brian McMahan get together hasn't lost its potency, and the show's best moments were more than anyone could have hoped for. Its worst were merely pretty good.
As filled out by bassist Todd Cook and guitarist Michael McMahan, Brian's younger brother, Slint's (literally) trademarked sound was in full bloom.
Pajo and the McMahans were workhorses when it came to creating textures, but Walford's remarkable drumming led the band. Not many drummers can shift from John Bonham to barely heard on such a thin dime, and his astounding sense of dynamics is the band's heart.
Brian McMahan spent much of the evening sans guitar, which was a surprise. Never the most confident singer, he seemed to be focusing on making sure that the sketchy, fragmented lyrics had a fighting chance against the wall of sound.
It worked. "Nosferatu Man" and "Good Morning, Captain" alone were worth the wait, their shifting dynamics building to a release that left you feeling as if you were inches from stepping off a building's ledge, one foot already hovering over the street.
Opening act Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti was asked to leave the stage after five songs by a guy in the audience. Pink's best move all night was to accommodate him.

It really was a very heavy, very special show....the magnitude of having seen it is still coming to me.
It is something kin to having seen the first Pixies show at the Fineline in April, which I did not, but those of you who did will understand.

That Courier Journal review was pretty lame. It barely talked about it - guess the reviewer didn't actually go? Could ya let me know if you find any better, Clark?
I'm glad the trip was worth it. I sure didn't want to steer you wrong. :)
Streaming audio of the whole show! - check the "friends" to the lower right for the rest of the show (it's in four parts from what I can tell).

I've devoted a blog to documenting the five shows I will be attending, if anyone cares. A lot of it's my personal interaction to the music and what it's meant to me... but it'll have more details than that Courier-Journal article.

Great blog. I'm very glad you got a shot of the Marquis at Brown Theatre. Our friend's girlfriend had us running behind and I didn't get a chance to. Your review is wonderful. I haven't finished it yet, but even just a few paragraphs in, I am so glad you wrote it. Good history of the Brown, and very nice photos as well.
I'll be at the 3 Chicago shows (just added the March 24th Metro date). Maybe I'll see you at Park West?

I haven't heard Slint at all, but a really cool blog anyway. Talk about infectious enthusiasm!
The last time I sat waiting for the dj to name a song/artist, I was 20 minutes late for work, but it payed off... The Polyphonic Spree.

I actually looked at my notes on "Saturday Night" and Good Morning Captain had two +'s beside it. My favourite song on there had five, so it did pretty well. By way of contrast, Junkyard had 8 -'s.

I found myself thinking that over and over as we went through the mixer. Though each person's disc(s) had songs I really enjoyed too. Two pluses is pretty decent, actually, since the scale generally is -5 to +5 with 0 being a song I'm indifferent to (Fugazi - Floating Boy). Scaling that up from 0 to 11, that means the Slint song gets an 8/11.
Of course, sometimes I so radically love/hate a song that I'll go off the charts and give it a bunch of pluses or minuses. Or I'll get too focused on relativity and forget about staying within +/- 5.
But this is all irrelevant, I'm sure. :)
