Believe it or not, but the alarm in my building was set off this afternoon. This is some impressive screaming, Dean.

Hm, that is bad news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/4375457.stm
That is a good little trick, actually. Can't read any of the subarticles, but funny nonetheless.

Apparantly they have cancelled 'cos Yoda can't make it. He's got a hot date apparantly.
Seriously Dean I'm pleased for you man. I'm just glad I missed all this last night or else I would have been panicking along with Kitty. It was tense just reading it now.
So when do you think you will make it to Manchester now? Or should we all just go to London?

Depends on whether I go to Iceland, I guess. I need to book some tickets very soon, so I should be able to give you a better answer in a week or so. Ideally, I wouldn't leave till after Mother's Day because it's the busiest day of the year in the restaurant, but that only gives me 10 or less days to get to London, not to mention that I wouldn't mind being there on the 16th. If I go before Mother's Day, well...
I guess I just don't know yet. :)

Alright! So: Dean arrives Edinburgh at 9:50 AM May 11. It's official! Probably avoids Glasgow.
May 13ish: Newcastle, Manchester, York. Which one or all three?
Liverpool? Worth it for Beatles fan? Other things?
Oxford: Nice to see?
London: Be here for May 16 possibly, which cuts short some of my UK traverse. Definitely be here by May 18. Stay until the 20th.

Dean, try and get to Brighton (home of Mel, but it 'aint all bad ).
I wouldn't bother with Newcastle or York. Liverpool isn't too bad actually (that takes some guts from a Mancunian). Oxford centre is nice too, I think Kitty can tell you more about Oxford though.
Look forward to seeing you.

Oxford is a very beautiful city, if you decide you're going there I can tell you where all the good record shops are (and I mean gooood) the must see places and the best restraunts/bars/coffee shops. There's a thriving Oxford based alternative scene as well, it's a rare night there isn't a gig or something on.
it's a bit pricey though, are you thinking of staying over there?
try not to talk to any of the students, they're weird.

Well, I don't really know, I guess. I probably will have a better idea tomorrow when I find out about this whole Star Wars thing since that'll determine how much time I spend in the northern parts. If there's enough to see, I guess I'd stay there (and if I can find somewhere that's not TOO expensive), but otherwise, maybe stop for a few hours, look around, grab a bite, and on to London.
Where would be a good locale to meet up with you lot?

*cough* bias *cough*
Ok, Oxford (seeing as I can't sleep I'll be helpful)
sight seeing Botanical Gardens - http://www.botanic-garden.ox.ac.uk/Garden/gardenintro.html very pretty if you like flowers but is quite a large part of the oxford experience as are..
University Colleges - You'll never get in to see all of them because of stupid entry times and all sorts of restrictions not to mention how they are spread throughout the city (and to be honest once you've seen one...) I had a friend at Lincoln college one of the smaller ones and that was quite pleasant, I think the most popular for visitors is Christ Church though - http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/modules/standard/viewpage.asp?id=274 - it's certainly the most striking and has it's own gallery too - http://www.chch.ox.ac.uk/modules/standard/viewpage.asp?id=435 - one of the other ones that I think is nicest is Magdalen (Maudlin - stupid pronounciation) http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/college_life/chapel.shtml and it's also convenient for a rather nice riverside walk that leads you to where they hire out the punts and a fabulous pub with a nice beer garden on the river who do the best traditional food.
The Ashmoleum museum - affiliated with the university it's a mightily impressive place http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/ and also convenient for the best ice-cream shop in the whole of oxford, it's all about the icecream.
The eagle and child pub is also nearby to the museum, famous for being the meeting place of literary greats such as CS Lewis and Tolkein, and they serve up an ok pint as well. Pretty much next door is the Lamb and Flag where it is claimed Hardy wrote most of Jude the Obscure (I don't think I ever went there myself though)
I'd also go to the original Oxfam (I got some great books from there) and avoid the Oxford experience shop (unless you really want an Oxford T shirt) also just up the road from there is Blackwells Bookshop which is amazing, they have a darling coffee shop in the middle and the whole place just oozes knowledge. Again (back to the city centre pubs..) if you carry on up past the blackwells you arrive at the Turf Tavern - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/406/ - this is where a lot of the students go drinking, I went there a few times for the pimms and lemonade when the rowing was on, it's got lots of little coridoors and hidey holes and it's pretty friendly.
going out plenty of options, for low down indie joy there is the cowley road. Just over Magdelen bridge is a venue called the point, there are two roads that diverge form the point, one leads to headington (more on that later) the other leads to the Cowley road. The point is a brilliant venue for the smaller bands and I spent a lot of time there. Further down the way there is an art house cinema (where I saw clockwork orange for the first time) and a few strange pubs, the hob goblin is ok and there's another (I forget the name of) that has astroturf instead of carpet. The club on the road is the Zodiac (Part owned by Thom Yorke) which is an excellent venue and a pretty good club too. The cowley road has a couple of really good record shops, Polar records being where trompe le monde was purchased many moons ago, and a good variety of eateries as well, moroccan, sushi, plenty of chinese restraunts and good old fashioned kebab shops. If you head a small way up the headington road though there is a couple of superb sci fi book and comic stores (not that I know anything about that of course) and two eally great restraunts, Fishers which specialises in seafood and the pink giraffe which is vegetarian oriental and they do the best tofu I have ever tried. http://www.oxfordrestaurantguide.co.uk/fishers/ the pubs around there are all very nice, in fact down the one side street a place called the star has a great beer garden and a greater jukebox.
For the posher night out there is a plethora of cocktail bars and amazing italian restraunts more in the centre of town. On there are very nice places to eat and you can't go wrong with gourmet pizza (bacon and goats cheese mmmmmm) the Camel bar is nice and if it's still open cafe bohem does the best cocktails I have ever tried.
Near the ashmolean museum is a side street called little claredon street with a browns, a cafe rouge and a fabulous french place I can't remember the name of. But most importantly THE ICECREAM SHOP seriously, the absolute BEST EVER! G&D's http://www.thehotspotonline.com/thewurld/articles/GeorgeandDavis.htm amazing.
The covered market is worth a visit, the fresh cookie stall rules and above a card shop is georginas coffee shop, an absolute must. Small and very cool in decor, schunky wood tables and chairs, free papers, brilliand coffee and cakes and bagels to die for. The ceiling is plastered with iconic posters and it is just too cool for school. in fact Georgina's, Covered Market By far the funkiest cafe in town, Georgina's has the most tempting food we've seen. We only came for breakfast coffee and toast, but could easily spend all day here on bagels, salads, gargantuan ciabatta sandwiches and Lots Of Cake. see! why would I lie!
places to stay http://www.hostels.co.uk/oxford/index.htm
generic hostel really, but cheap and central.
http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/836.html they shut down the fabulous youth hostel in headington, this is the new one right by the train station so very central but you have to be a member which bumps the price up to £30 ish.
http://www.hostelsweb.com/hostelsweb.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=10560 This is actually on the road I used to live on, I lived in a house not too disimilar, out of oxford centre in headington this has advantages and disadvantages. Headington is a lovely place (most of Radiohead lived there when I did) and old headington (a sub part of headington) is very olde worlde with beamed cottages and cobble stoned streets, there's a gorgeous pub there called the White stag I think with big flag stones on the floor and an open fire, it's really charming. Headington is also convenient for the oxford tube - http://www.oxfordtube.com/ - a bus service that goes to london very frequently about every ten minutes or so and is dirt cheap. Headington has a massive park called south park that overlooks the towering spires and is really lovely. It's also convenient for the Cowley road as they run concurrent (the cowley road verges in one direction from the point, the headington road another)
If I think of anything else I'll add it. I gone got all nostalgic now.

oh this is sad! this is the house I used to live in
and now it has been knocked down
sorry, indulge me a minute, it was such a beautiful house with three gardens (two secret gardens) and it was such a happy time. My ex used to lean out of the window above the blue covered door and shoot at me with his spud gun when I got home from work, and my friend ruth and I used to collapse on that door in a drunken tizzy, and once we found a whole family of cats living in the trees there! And I lived in the room next to the garage with my own little garden and wooden patio doors that stayed open all the time in the summer! how very sad.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll make some rough plans one I get this Star Wars thing figured out. Was hoping to visit Andy in Ireland too, but I may not have time. :(
We should all just meet in London and book a dorm room at a hostel. Now that'd be some fun. :)

Still undecided on my UK travels, since I already have my ticket to Edinburgh (how is this pronounced properly, I was debating with someone to day who announced it's said like it looks Ed-in-berg). I said it was either Edin-bur or Edin-burra (I don't know where that 'a' would come from but I've heard someone say it that way)).
I'm thinking probably Edinburgh (May 11/12/13) ->Oxford? (May 14) depending on how long the trip is to there/if possible, may stop somewhere en route ->Oxford (May 15) ->London (May 16/19) -> ? May 20
Again, recommendations for the south of the land are welcome. So what do you British folk want to do? Feel like coming by London on say the 17th or 18th? Should I stop somewhere further north and meet the northerners and then meet the southerners separately? Should I avoid the whole lot of you?
Anyway, I may see Brighton, or maybe I'll just take the chunnel out of London to France. And then again, in France, hopefully I can run into a few of you. Hopefully I can run into Frog in the Sand and, even though they will avoid me at all lengths, some of the Parisians. I don't know if I'll make it to Portugal or not yet, but we shall see...
If you're up for a meeting, I'd love an email so that I can kind of keep track in my inbox of who's where and so on.
Anyway, just re-reading this thread since it is a sign of the apocalypse and thought it time to revive it.

Edinburgh (burra- seriously) to oxford is a ~7 hour train journey and a lot of money (looking at £100) you might be better flying to somewhere southern (again - seriously often cheaper and quicker)

Im in London from the 17th - 20th,. not really around for the evening though, as im there for a gig on each night.
But if theres a big old meet up, ill happily come along.
If you do go to manchester, the temple IS the place to be. I love that place. Id go back to manc just to go there.
Im gonna be staying around kings cross (in a hotel, i might add, not just walking the streets!), so i can get to anywhere in london, but i guess if the northerners are coming down, they will prob come in to kings cross st pancras.....sooooo...
