Hey, I'm just debating coming over a little earlier as I was counting (roughly) how long I'd spend in various places I'd like to visit and it comes out at about two months (not including living in Greece). I'd like to be in Greece over the summer a little more, so if I moved it up a bit, I could be there for most of July and August, and hopefully get a fun job during the high season.

Anyway, the one fly in the ointment might be the Star Wars release in May. Specifically May 19, at least over here (I'm pretty sure it's a simultaneous release in the UK). Anyway, the question is, would I have any chance of getting in to the movie on opening night over there? Not that any of you can probably compare vs North American theatres, but how are the screens/sound over there? Is Star Wars likely to be nuts /camping out for three days to get in opening night, or how has it been in the past? Finally, are there good theatres in non-London locales?

And to premptively strike, yes, I know I'm a geek. But you have no idea how excited I am for this movie.

Now then, rough itinerary:
Iceland. Blue Lagoon, visit Arctic Fox lair

UK. Fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow (should I go up to Inverness?), down through Newcastle, York, Manchester, stay somewhere in one of those towns, visit FB.Netters. Liverpool, pay homage to the Beatles, ferry to Dublin, down to Cork and back to Cardiff/Swansea, catch Stonehenge if possible, Oxford (if on way), a few days in London (see Star Wars premiere?), ferry to France.

France. Few days in Paris (avoid Denis), head to wine regions in Bordeaux or Beaujolais or somewhere, visit Toulouse/Frog in the Sand, MAYBE pop down to Barcelona since I have a weakness for Spanish women and mostly to give the town a second chance, then along French coast to Cannes/Nice, up (through Avignon?) to Geneva in Switzerland.

Switzerland. Been here before, so mostly a stop in Geneva, Zurich, and probably that's it.

Italy. Milan and Venice. I've been to Venice and wouldn't weep about missing Milan, so I may drop this.

Austria. Spend some time hiking/biking/rafting, doing outdoorsy stuff in Tirol. Pass through Salzburg en route to Prague.

Czech Republic. Prague. I've got some reading to do.

Germany. I really don't care if I stop over here, but I'll probably spend a few days in Berlin en route to Denmark.

Denmark. Copenhagen via ferry (or possibly come via Jutland). Don't know of anything else to see here.

Sweden/Norway/Finland. Lots of time here. A day or so in Malmo (great music scene, I hear), stop in Gothenburg/Goteborg, and then I'm not sure. I'd like to cross the arctic circle and get far enough north to where the sun doesn't set. Or at least to the land of the "midnight sun". May go from Gothenburg to Stockholm and then over to Norway. If pressed for time, I might have to miss Norway, though I'd love to see that coast/the fjords. Ideally, I'd like to travel up the Norwegian coast and then come back down through either Sweden or Finland.

Russia. St. Petersburg and Moscow. Not sure that I want to spend lots of time here, but I do want to see the cities.

Then, since I'm pressed for time I'll probably fly to Thessaloniki (Greece) and work my way down to Peleponesos to Tripolis and visit some family before going to the islands to work/play.

So that's that. If I missed something that you think I should see or am stopping over somewhere that's not worth it, by all means say so, since that's what I posted this for. Thanks for reading/helping/not calling attention to my geekiness more than necessary. :)

I'm answering for Paris. I guess it's basically the same for London.
Only the best theatre will really be sold out for the premiere (Max Linder in Paris and I guess the big one on leicester square (Odeon?) in London.
So you shouldn't worry about that (and you can always ask for a fellow fbnet member to book a ticket for you)

They show English movies in Paris? Really? That's intriguing in several ways. Of course, nothing but the best will do, theatre wise, though if it came down to it, I'd see it in a lesser theatre just to see it on opening night.

I'll try to give you enough time to dig out some sort of Dean-shelter, Mike.

(was that sarcastic?)

Cinema-wise, Paris is the greatest city in the world.
In France, movies are both released in their original language and in french. Unfortunately they tend to be released way more in french.
Ah, how I envy the Dutch!

How about going to London first, collecting me, then going to Iceland. I'll hate you if you don't, with a burning hate.

Holiday Son, what I meant was, would I be able to see an English movie (like Star Wars) in Paris without subtitles? No sarcasm, honest. I just assumed they'd subtitle the English shows. Maybe the French in Quebec are more protective than in France...

Simon, you're welcome to meet me in Iceland. We'll travel to the Blue Lagoon and see the Lair of the Arctic Fox, as well as possibly unleashing unspeakable evils.

My misunderstanding.
Of course, all movies shown in a foreign language are subtitled.

I'm assuming your visit to Manchester will coincide with a cheeky northern forum meet up - more than likely in drinking establishment known as The Temple?

I am suggesting - err no, make that insisting - that any forum members based in the north of England show you how we amuse ourselves - lots of beer in one of the best boozers in Manchester (complete with the best jukebox I've ever encountered) and with any luck whatsoever maybe a decent gig thrown in for good measure.

It's the best bar I have ever been to anywhere. I love it so. Cosy, no dickheads, amazing music, beers from all over the world and beautiful bar staff. Perfect. At The Temple we shall worship. It has officially been the venue for 3 forum meet-ups thus far, and it shall be the venue for a fourth before Dean even gets here when I take kitty and friend there before The Arcade Fire.

Well, May 4 is probably early, but if there are good shows going on mid-May then definitely I'd love to know about it. Or if there's a bunch back-to-back or a festival with a great line up in June I may swing back from Norway for it. It wouldn't be a European trip without some great arts/culture!

The only English festival worth seeing in June is Glastonbury. You'll do well to get a ticket though.

Hey, is the good theatre in London one of these? Tickets go on sale tomorrow. It'd be funny if I'd bought my London Star Wars tickets before my actual plane tickets.

I was thinking of the really big one just in front of Leicester Square. I'm pretty sure it's the Odeon. It's the one where all the premieres with the cast and crew are held.

Ooh, sounds ritzy. I'm sure I won't get a ticket, but I shall try from here anyway! Though I've heard something about Ireland having good theatres and purportedly moving to digital film starting about a month ago.

Holy crap, yeah. I must see it there. Anyone else coming with me/want to coordinate a purchase tonight at midnight (GMT)? Preferably the 7 show, but whatever, if I get to see it on opening day that's fine by me. I'd be more than happy with the midnight/first show too, and will settle for an afternoon show though there's something about the excitement of the evening shows...

Someone was saying that Red Cinema in Sheffield is pretty good too, biggest screen in Britain or something, might use that as a backup.

Also, I found out the hard way about the cinema != theatre thing in my googling. Kept getting ticket offers for The Producers. Here they're interchangable when talking movies, but not when talking live shows.

I know at the Filmworks in Manchester they have a Gallery section above the regular seats. They have leather sofas with loads of leg room and you get unlimited soft drinks, popcorn and nachos. You can also take booze in there. Pretty cheap too considering, it's £10 on weeknights and £15 on weekends.

While that's very cool for any other movie, Mike, this one I must be close to the action. Squish me in a sardine seat, I don't care. Refuse me beverage or popcorn even. But put me about 6 rows back from the screen and surround me with geeks of equal or greater measure.

6 rows back!!?? Are you kidding? Oh no, that's way too near for optimum viewing, especially on the large screens they have nowadays.

Hey Dean, you ever thought of going dressed as a character? I remember when the remastered versions of the the original movies hit the theatres, I thought it would be cool to all go dressed as Stormtroopers.

Yeah, sitting near the front is worse than sitting right at the back. at least you can see the whole screen without turning your head.

Well, on the small screens we have here, 6th row is optimal for sound and for just fitting the whole screen in your field of view. Our city's without any major screens, though the ink is all but there on a new $15-$18 million dollar complex downtown.

I agree with not sitting too close that you have to turn/can't see anything, but sitting far far back is like sitting at home. You get a lot more drawn in when all you can see is the screen. Plus you have the distraction of a gazillion people in front of you. The only good balcony seats are in the very first row, and even then... you're still pretty far from the screen in any theatre I've been to.

The screens in the Leicester Square cinemas are way huge Dean, speshally if you can get into the big Odeon there. And buckets of popcorn you could literally dive into.
Expensive though, like £12 a pop.

I've just been told it's the Odeon, it has to be the odeon if you're serious it just has to be, everywhere else isn't the same, everyone is going to be there, it has to be, there isn't a second best odeon odeon blah. My word it's going to be geek central in London come May time.

This is just making me want to go there more. I just got the unofficial nod from work that I could leave in May, so I'm going to try to get a ticket tonight I guess.

I don't mind paying what is effectively $30 since this is sort of a one-time thing for me. But that's well beyond pricey for an everyday show.
