Anyone want to help me spread the gospel of The Arcade Fire's album "Funeral"?

It's marvellous and indescribable. An orchestra of guitars, accordions, xylophones. A Quebecois singer with a voice strikingly like Bjork. Bits of Neutral Milk Hotel, New Order, and - oddly - Neil Young and early U2. Surreal, anthemic, simultaneously sad and elated, bombastic, overdone and melodramatic in a good way.

Did I mention that the Bjork-sounding girl doesn't sound like new Bjork but like vintage Sugarcubes Bjork? Does that help? Did I mention that they have lyrics like: "When Daddy comes home/You always start a fight/So the neighbors can dance/In the police disco lights"? Still not curious? Um. Did I mention they mix 80's retro with 50's doo-wop? And the Cure? Did I mention they have lyrics like: "Three cheers for my parents!/Lonely failed experiments!"

I did? Oh. Nevermind.

Sounds intriguing, Alpha.
I tried to find an mp3 or two.
Here is a review I found on Pitchfork while I was looking for sounds
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/a/arcade-fire/funeral.shtml

Doesn't help me much though, so I'm off to keep looking for sounds. Thanks for sharing. :)

There's a few songs on the lable site, mergerecords.com.
There are also some on a number of music blogs.
Apl4eris, I think there's only a couple with a clear doowop vibe. One's Crown of Love, if you can find it. At least it sounds doowoppy to me. But then, I'm not sure I know what doowop is anyway.

After you see them perform it live, you'll have to pick yourself up off the ground, find your shoes, and catch a cab back to the show.

The Arcade Fire's album "Funeral" hasn't left the cd-player and I've been listening to it for about a month so far.

Now, that's unusual. I'm really picky with music, but this album has that sound you crave. It's one of those albums that might take a few listenings and then it sticks with you for a long, long time.

Even the wife likes it.

Holy shit!
I was just pondering about how incredibly cool I will appear after posting a topic about Arcade fire. It just arrived in the mail. I'm giving it a first listen righ now. Like it right off the bat.
I also got: Seaweed, Spoon, Supperchunk (live at cat's cradle) and both of Lambchop's two new ones. I'm already a huge Superchunk fan and that's how I discovered Arcade fire.

Alpha, did you discover them from my merge radio post?
Please say yes. (I so desire to have a positive influence on something other than my chameleons).

My friend has lent me the album and has been raving on about them for a little while now. Have to say that I am not that impressed so far but I will have to give it more spins.

There certainly seems to be a lot of bands coming out of Canada right now, most of them excellent.

Help me! He keeps making me post!

I bought the Funeral CD Saturday (import, it's not officially released here) after downloading it on SLSK and I'm in love!
Perfect!
They'll play in Paris in March, I'm going to buy my tickets today!

Thank you Forum! It's with the link for the radio show someone posted that I've discovered them. Muchas Gracias!

Saw them play last night at the 9:30 club in DC.

What a fantastic show.....they were great. At the end of the gig they walked off the stage and the entire band walked through the crowd, still playing (kinda), up the stairs and left via the side exit upstairs.

Cool way to end the gig after playing a nice 3 song encore.

That's very cool. They are playing here on Saturday but it is sold out.

Anyway, I love their CD so much. It makes me feel nostaligic for something I can't remember. And many of the songs make me cry. I think it's very beautiful.

Ramona, sometimes it makes me very sad too, I don't really know why... maybe because it's so wonderful and beautiful. They show all their emotion singing, I think it's that.

Don't forget that a lot of the songs were written about the deaths of their loved ones (9 in total during the writing/recording of the record) so it is bound to be sad really. In The Back Seat is the one that gets me the most. Amazing song, so beautiful. And she really sounds like Bjork on that one.

It's not that the songs make me sad at all, it's that I think they are so fucking beautiful and THAT is what makes me cry. The emotion behind the songs is very intense to me, and the MUSIC is so gorgeous.

Yeah I don't get sad from them either, I can't really relate to the lyrics 'cos I have never had anything like that happen to me, but the music and vocals are so beautiful. I can definitely see how the lyrics could be sad to some people though.

It's funny because I actually think the lyrics are very hopeful and beautiful. LIke, what does it all MEAN but look how awesome life really is. I think as much as they are expressing sadness at the death of their loved ones, they are also saying "hey. life is really fucking amazing".

True. Though I guess with the luck that they've had, it's that or end it all. Perhaps the only thing to do when faced with so much death, is embrace life. I dunno. I guess things can only get better for them, and they probably realise that.

Thanks for the heads up Sir rockabye. It was first time I had heard them and the first minute or 2 of the guy singing sure sounded like David Byrne and the Talking Heads. I need to check out more.
