Isaac Brock on BF! (This is eleven years old but I just stumbled across it..)
Frank Black, "The Vanishing Spies"
Isaac Brock: Not one of my favorite songs off that record, but it's not bad. His solo albums are kind of hit-or-miss. At first, I felt like it was kind of wanky in a weird way, and then after I listened to it, I was like, "This is fucking great." Most of the songs on Teenager Of The Year were pretty damn good, like that song "Headache." That's a fuckin' great song. Probably the reason I bought the record—actually, I was gonna buy the record whether there's any good songs on it or not. I fuckin' love that guy. I haven't bought the last couple he's done. I'm sure I will. I haven't really had time to be in a record store buying shit for a while, to be honest.
Thanks to The Maharal for linking this, great interview!
I definitely felt something similar with The Vanishing Spies. Listening to the cassette on my car tapedeck in 1994, I used to think, "Man this song just throws off the pace of the whole album" or something like that. It was the first song by fbf that I just did not like. Now of course I love it. It still feels a bit incongruous to the first four songs of TOTY, but in a good way.
And cool to see him plugging Dylan and the Surfers.
Can't remember what I thought of it at first but I know that for about ten years now I have been using the phrase "that's just how some things do not materialize" on a very regular basis.
Anyone remember a dutch or german tv crew visiting FB & The C in the studio during their later years? I saw this but can't find it. Also, I seem to recall they made a video for Robert Onion. Anyone ever see it?
My TMBG podcast Don't Let's Start: A Podcast About They Might Be Giants has gone over just about every collaboration TMBG and Frank have had, including his performing with them on stage multiple times, and Flansburgh directing Los Angeles, and our new episode in a month or two is going to discuss Oddballs. We also interviewed Brian Doherty who played with Frank and even played a rare band rehearsal/demo he gave us!
Speaking of my favorite bands colliding, this just went up on youtube, Cracker hosting 120 Minutes, and there's two mentions of Frank Black, including an interview with Frank I had never seen before:
Heh, the last couple of days I have been blasting some TMBG. I noticed they're due to come here in the autumn and play Flood in its entirety so I must snap up the tickets soon. I will check out that podcast episode soon too, thanks.
Hey everyone! I found this hidden away on YouTube and uploaded it to my own channel. There's more from Frank in the full original video too if you feel like scrolling around. All info is in the YouTube description:
