...were recorded live to 2-track? I'll feel really stupid if none of them were but I remember reading before that some of the COR songs were done live to 2-track

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the whole album was recorded this way. Anyway, just before or after the release of COR, Frank told a French magazine that he was very satisfied with this method. If I remember well, he added that his young brother seemed to enjoy the COR sound more than the songs themselves.

i'm pretty sure what they did was record the band live to 2-track and then overdub on top of the best take. thats what an old issue of Gutiar magazine said at least

I did'nt think COR was only 2-track...although I do remember FB saying it was recorded fairly simply,1 guitar left channel, the other right,in a TV interview. The first Catholics album was,I think nearly all the FB+Catholics are.

yes, COR was a live 2-track album, and produced by FB himself.

I think it was recorded to 16-track. It sounds as though there are three guitars in "The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb".

Frank Black on COR:

"That's where it started to get simplified — we went down to 16 tracks," he says. "It wasn’t live, but it was more live with simpler performances involving fewer instruments..."

I think that the way Cult of Ray is recorded and mixed is a big part of what takes the punch out of it for a lot of people. Example - the solo at the end of Jesus Was Right is kickass, but shouldn't be on only one channel. I think that panning stuff all the way to one side makes it seem more isolated and distant from the instruments on the other side. I don't like the way the band Love was mixed either. The drums are only in one channel. UGH!
