I really like jazz, but never bought a record, I am a jazz-downloader. Since a couple of days, I listen to jazz all the time : Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker again, a French pianist called Bojan Z, Gillespie, etc.
Could someone make me a list of, let's say, 10 really exceptional jazz records. It would be nice of you. Thx.

I'm not sure what type of Jazz you like the best, but here's some stuff off the top of my head. I really love the early jazz - 20s through the late 30s, but I love it all. We haven't listened to it as much lately, but we have a big stash of jazz 78s that are a ball to play on the victrola. I'd tell you what albums to get, but if you look these ppl up online, the reviews usually give you a clue - there are so many different jazz recordings and masterings that it's kinda hit and miss. I'm no expert, but I really get into it. These are all major players, so they shouldn't be hard to find (not exactly 10 - sorry!):
Zoot Sims (did lots of work in France)
Harry James
Johnny Hodges
Woody Herman
Count Basie
Duke Ellington
Bennie Goodman
Jimmy Dorsey
early Louis Armstrong (Creole Jazz/Dixieland) and later (more mainstream, not my fave)
singers:
Billie Holiday
Etta James
Ella Fitzgerald
If you haven't already, you might want to see if you can rent "The Jazz Singer" with Al Jolson (the first full-length feature with sound, from 1927, though not much spoken).

I'm no expert and I'm trying to learn more, but here's what I like so far
Monk (like Newo said he's the top) - I first got into Solo Monk, but "Brilliant Corners" is great and sometimes said to be his best, see what he meant when he said "there are no wrong notes"
Gillespie - he gives me chills, I like "Sonny Side Up" with him, Sonny Sitt, and Sonny Rollins
Ellington - him with his band live is perfection, The Newport Jazz festival where they tore the place apart (Gonzalez's solo) is a classic, but there's many live albums
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - I don't know much of his stuff but their album "Moanin'" is grea
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" and "Birth of the Cool" are necessary. I also like "Porgy and Bess" like Newo said, "Sketches of Spain" is also very nice
Joe Williams - great singer, check him out with Count Basie on "Williams Sings, Basie Swings" (or something like that)
Bill Evans - great piano, relaxing stuff, I think he was in Davis's quartet
Ella Fitzgerald - Songbooks
Sonny Rollins - "Colosus"
Coltrane - I actually like "Giant Steps" more than "Love Supreme"
Oscar Peterson - more great piano
Modern Jazz Quartet - solid stable group
"Bags Groove" - Miles Davis, Monk, Rollins, and others, sometimes hyped as the best jazz session ever

Miles Davis has a 1974 album called "Get up With It". Though it's definitely not a classic, it's notable for having a 30-minute song that doesn't get boring. Most mediocre artists today make 5-minute songs that are boring. Just goes to show how incredibly COOL Miles is.

If you want to feel like you're on acid, but not take any, see if you can find "air pocket" by the Fowler Brothers (the Fowler Brothers are the most talented family of musicians on the planet and make most living musicians sound silly). I think they use Tony Morales (rippingtons drummer)on the record. (Best living studio drummer.)

Miles Davis - anything from 1968 up to his retirement.
Coltrane - anything up to and including Love Supreme (before he lost his mind)
Monk - anything
Cannonball Adderly - Anything with his brother and Joe Zawinal
Ahmad Jamal - Anything...known for his overt minimalism, "real" jazz guys hated him and claimed he was nothing more than "lounge", however people like Miles loved him because of his simplicity.
Hand held shower nozzles are the demon enemy of the patriarch and should be destroyed. |

Do yourself a favor and pick up Miles Davis - "The Complete Concert 1964: My Funny Valentine + Four and More"
It's a live recording with Miles, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and a great sax player whose name eludes me. It was a benefit concert and Miles didn't tell the other players they were working for free until right before they went on so they were pissed off and played everything really fast and furious, including the ballads. It's amazing.
Also check out Masada. They're a Jazz quartet (drum, upright, trumpet, alto sax) fronted by John Zorn. Everything they've done is great. I think they're the best current thing going in Jazz. Best live jazz I've ever seen.

Kind Of Blue is the most obvious jazz album anyone could name. However, its also one of the best albums of any genre ever. Truly awesome.
Also Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way by Davis, Headhunters by Herbie Hancock is pretty cool, and I'll drop in Nat King Cole again.
