How do you pronounce "The Pixies?"
First off, I'm a fairly new fan of the Pixies. But somehow a few months ago before I really knew who they were I talked to this girl about them, and she told me that their name was pronounced like "Picks." I had never heard their name anywhere else because I only knew them from the Fight Club soundtrack. Well anyway... I soon developed an obsession with them, but I've had a handful of people tell me that Pixies is pronounced like it looks (pick-sees), so I'm ultimately confused.
I know this is very absurd, but I'd be very grateful if you could help me out here.
I wish I had a pot. |

the only possible explanation is that someone was saying 'pix' for short.
god i feel dumber for having read this thread. |

Oh my.
Well... it could have been worse I suppose. At least I wasn't asking how to prounounce "Christina Aguilera" or "Avril Lavinge."
Also, I'm honestly not sure if she actually knew who The Pixies are. Her favorite singer is Britney Spears, and I shit you not.

For the record, I pronounced it the proper at first until she corrected me. Earlier this year, I decided to give going to Catholic School a try (I have no fucking clue why; I probably skipped my medication the day I told my mom to send in an application form). The history teacher there was an absolute nut case, and she started this program where groups of freshman got together once a week to talk about abortion is bad and the likes. So, about two weeks into the school year the program started, and I was still extremely shy because I didn't know a single person there. First we had to share trivial information about ourselves, followed by going through the process of chosing a name for ourselves. And as fate should have it, I proposed deeming ourselves the Pixies. Of course, the dumbasses argued that it was too girly, so I defending myself by saying that they were a rock band. The young lady sitting next to me said "That's Picks." Or so I thought... now that I look back on it, I'm guessing she was referring to Styx for some odd reason. But at this point, I was too scared to say anything else for fear of being mocked, and I just figured "Hey, she's really popular, and I'm just a loser, so she must be right!" (I seriously have issues).
I left that hellhole a few weeks later and went back to the dilapidated puclic school. Compared to Catholic school, it seemed like heaven to me.
Moral of the story: Don't trust popular bitches. And Catholic school sucks.
Finally, I would like to apologize for being such a nuisance. I think I need ritalin. Or a straitjacket.

i've heard respectable DJ's pronouce David Bowie "BOW" like take a bow - with the long
ee .... i must admit it always starts some kind of debate when you mention ziggy stardust's name, everyone thinks their version is right but usually it's the BOW - bow-tie- BOwie's in the left corner, wearing the red pants, and the BOW- take-a-bow Bowie's in the right corner, wearing the blue pants - who will knock the other one out??????????

| Speaking of David Bowie (i've told this story before), the guy that comes to Pizza Hut to fix our equipment is named David Bowie, and our manager pronounces it "Boo-ee". |

well as i mentioned in the *OTHER* thread where this topic came up, bowie (the famous one) got his name from the knife. even though the knife's name is pronounced BOO-ee, his name is still BOW-ee.
but BOO-ee is the way i'd guess people actually born with it would pronounce it, unless they were real big fans or something. |
