in what i would consider to be one of the worst years for movies in recent memory, i finally saw a truly a stand-out film..

has anyone seen this?

i really loved it.. (and wasn't expecting to, because i was disappointed by HUMAN NATURE, also written by Charlie Kaufman)..

it should win best screenplay but it won't because the Oscars are ridiculous in the first place..

does adaptation ever plan to be a major release. like One hour photo, its only playing at the fancy Ritz theatre near me which is too far away to bother going to (over 40 mins). id like to see it, but no dice i guess.

I actually edited the audiobook of "The Orchid Thief" which is what Adaptation is based on. The book is complete garbage and when I heard 2 years ago that they were making a movie out of it, I didn't believe it. When it actually came out I was scared, but then I read the synapsis and found out that it's not about the book, it's about CK trying to make a movie of the book. I pissed my pants when I read that. I hope it'll hit more theaters soon . . .

i don't know if i'd count on a wider release.. it's probably too weird for the general populace.. and too smart.

not to sound elitist or anything, but this is a pretty subtle, complicated film. it's kind of like an MC Escher painting, filmed. the logic of the film is pretty convoluted..

so i doubt it'll be opening in say Kansas, but maybe they'll go a bit wider.

there's always DVD though..

Atheist - that's pretty crazy that you worked on the audio book. did she narrate? you are going to get such a kick out of this fucking film!!!

i'll see anything Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze do from here on out..

FYI, Spike Jonze also directed the Breeder's music videos Cannonball (with Kim Gordon), and Divine Hammer.

She (Susan Orlean) came in to narrate an introduction and I can't wait to see Streep make fun of her.

The book started out as a column Orlean wrote for some newspaper and then Random House (?) asked her to turn it into a book. She basically added 300 pages of filler like the history of Florida swamp lands and really tedious facts about orchids. The audiobook was 9 hours long and one of the worst I've edited (and I did a Danielle Steele book . . .)

Meryl Streep is brilliant in it. sounds like you'll have a special appreciation for this ..

i'd be curious to know how Orlean feels about the film. hopefully she has a good sense of humor.

so, is she cute?

There's a picture at http://www.powells.com/authors/orlean_2001.html but she's a bit more attractive than that (but not much)

I'm editing The Mars and Venus Diet and Exercise Solution right now. Also a piece of crap. I'd say 90% of the books I do are crap.

Cloud of Sparrows was cool though.
