Something difficult: You're working in a record company and you've got to select 14 FB's songs (no, no double CD!) to make his Best Of. As you love FB a lot, you (and your boss!) want this record to be double platinum, but you also want people to know the whole talent of Mr Thomson.
What would you do? chronology? the more commercial ones?

Most greatest hits albums are i guess just singles collections, but when you havent had a top 40 hit i guess it isn't that important....for what it's worth this would be my album, not my 14 faves but designed to 'ease in' the new FB listener :
Los Angeles, Czar, Abstract Plain, Speedy Marie, Headache, Calistan, Men In Black, All My Ghosts, Billy Radcliffe, St F DD, Robert Onion, Velvety, Jane, End Of Miles |

You want us to choose 14 songs from 8 albums? Wow that will be tough.

I've heard End of Miles, but I don't think it's an outstanding song. It's okay I guess but nothing special. At least that's my impression at the moment. Tomorrow, who knows, maybe it's my favourite song. But to be frank with you, I think the new albums are too soft. Too much country, too much blues for my tastes. I miss some real heavy power rock, I mean a song like So Hard To Make Things Out, or Los Angeles or All My Ghosts. I also think the songwriting on the new albums is too complex, the songs could have been more direct, more simple, fewer chords or something. They're not very accesible. I don't hear any great melodies. Some lalala choruses would have been nice, don't you think?

O.K., I'm gonna give this a bash, although its gonna be difficult as there aren't many FB songs that I do not like.
01. Los Angeles (the perfect start to an album) 02. Men In Black 03. Abstract Plain 04. Speedy Marie 05. Don't Ya Rile Em 06. Robert Onion 07. Dance War 08. St. Francis Dam Disaster 09. The Scene 10. All My Ghosts 11. Speedy Marie 12. Bad Harmony 13. End of Miles 14. I Want Rock N Roll 15. Pray A Little Faster **** Hidden Tracks **** 16. Black Letter Days **** Hidden Tracks **** 17. Whiskey in my Shoes **** Hidden Tracks ****
This is far too difficult to do, there are loads that I have missed out. But this would be the best of Frank Black in my opinion.

Whoops, two Speedy Marie's. Track number 11 would be replaced with Old Black Dawning. |

14 tracks, eh? Here are my picks, in no particular order:
1) Los Angeles 2) Cold Heart of Stone 3) Abstract Plain 4) Pray for the Girls (minus the Powerpuff Girls ending) 5) St. Francis Dam Disaster 6) Men in Black 7) Western Star 8) All My Ghosts 9) Velvety 10) California Bound 11) I Heard Ramona Sing 12) Fields of Marigold 13) The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb 14) Pie in the Sky
Oh, man, that came out really awful. 14 tracks just aren't enough...

I've been thinking the whole week end:
1-Los Angeles 2-Speedy Marie 3-Bullet 4-Men In Black 5-All My Ghosts 6-Dog Gone 7-Headache 8-The Swimmer 9-End of Miles 10-I Want Rock n' Roll 11-Modern Age 12-Superabound 13-Ada Lee 14-Man of steel
Plus: CD Live bonus (Europe only, ahahah) 1-Pong-Thalassocracy 2-Freedom Rock 3-Brackish Boy 4-21 Reasons
I agree L.A.is the best song to start.
