It's a short review, so I'll type it, it's from The Big Takeover issue 51..in stands now (for copyright reasons I guess).
Frank Black and the Catholics: Black Letter Days/Devil's Workshop
by Yosef Lewis
I've just about had it with everyone talking shit about Black's solo work. Sure, The Pixies were one of the best of their era but for your own good, listen without tiresome comparisons. Recorded live to two-track, both albums, released simultaneously, are dirty and loose hootenannies colored by California's coastal roads and overlowing with his inimitable talent--over 90 minutes of obtuse, insightful songs with dampers on the desperate morose preoccupation with sex and death and ear-splitting wails that got us addicted to his songs from the start The problems are more human these days--"I used to have some fun/Me and everyone/Now I'm just employed/I'm a Chip Away Boy" on "Chipaway Boy" of BLD. And his people can play; Dave Philips wails on pedal steel and shrieks on the electric--check out "Valentine and Garruda" and "1826" respectively on BLD. eric Drew Feldman (Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa) on keys and Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago also lend their able hands. "His Kingly Cave" and "Whiskey in Your Shoes," off DW, are powerful, irresistibly catchy, echo-drenched elegies that hold htier own place in his canon. Still a force to be reckoned with, sounding unaware of his hipster legacy and healthy for it.

Thanks for taking the trouble--nice to read a review that doesn't seem to have been written by a monkey with a typewriter. |

Nice review. BLD + DW are cracking albums, I'm pretty sure that the tossers that gave it a bad review only listened to those albums once before writing the review. Great albums but they need time to grow on you.... which in my opinion is always a sign of a great album. |

That is a good review. Frank should be noticed for his solo work instead of "the pixies dude."
Great Simpsons reference El Barto. Have you noticed how many times monkeys make an apperance on the Simpsons, it's great. :) |

Monkeys just always make things funnier. And chickens. Monkeys and chickens--you can't go wrong! |

This is true. I have this Jack Logan shirt with a chicken on it with a car coming over a hill towards it ... oh nevermind. You'd have to see it to understand.

Good review except I'm pretty sure Eric Drew Feldman never played for Frank Zappa. Anyone know differently?

I'm researching him now for his bio and I think you are correct on that point. If I find anything different I'll report back here!

Hey, I always wondered what the monkey ment with blurst? I know it's supposed to be worst, and the monkey got it wrong (stupid monkey), but does blurst mean anything? I tried to look it up on www.dictionary.com , but couldn't find anything...

i think it's a reference to the simpsons maybe? a roomful of monkeys typing and one of them ends up typing "it was the best of times, it was the *blurst* of times" instead of *worst* - the opening line to a dickens novel.
you know the old line, "if you put an infinite number of monkeys in a room and allowed them to type at typewriters for an infinite length of time, eventually they would produce the great works of literature - just at random." sounds like a loopy carl sagan concept to me.

I know it's a Simpsons reference, as frankblackphx also noted, but I don't know what blurst means - or is it just a typo that meant nothing?

I always took it as a typo. That (I think it was Monty) get's upset at the monkey for misspelling a word is a hilarous concept. You just have to love the Simpsons.
Good point Sarah, I forgot to mention chickens. (I prefer monkey humor more though). :) |
