Can't say I was ever into them, sadly I admit. But hey, I'm always into checking things out, so I will.

I just have bad memories of loooong middle school dances to "Stairway to Heaven" - don't know if I can ever overcome those. The HORROR!

'stairway' is really not that long of a song, only 8 minutes. if you want a long song, try 'triad' by tool (off of aenema.) 13+ minutes. Ween includes a 40 minute version of one of their songs on a new live album, but that's live so it's kinda disqualified.

Zanni, especially pick up Sabbath's Master Of Reality and Sabotage. I can't believe they were that heavy back then. Completely grounbreaking. It is a shame they keep getting screwed by the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame. One of the most influential bands ever.

Ahahahaha! Now that's funny! I actually have that Stairways to Heaven CD with 12 different treatments of it. There's one a la: Elvis, the Doors, B-52s, Beatles, and an actual Rolf Harris cover. My fave is the lounge treatment a la Steve & Edie--piss your pants funny.

Try Houses of the Holy. I love me some of that D'Yer Maker. Bay-bee, please, please, pleeease . . .

I've been listening to Houses Of The Holy lately. It really gives me the impression that the band was trying to challenge its less dedicated fans, what with the odd track-sequencing and TOTALLY non-conventional arrangements on a few songs. I'm totally enamored with that one tune... the one that's clearly missing a bridge.

13 mins isnt really even that long. 2112 by rush is surprisingly 21:12 mins long. and echos by pink floyd is 20:20 i think. but that tool song is cool.

2112 is more than one song though, obviously.

anyway i wasn't going for 'longest song ever' record, i was just citing one example that would be relatively well known.

Well, there's VU "Sister Ray" at around 17 minutes studio, then up near the hour-long at times, live. The Cure has a song released as its own record, called Carnage Visors. I think it's around a half-hour. Woo Hoo.

Led Zepplin sucks hard. OK. I don't mean there wasn't some talent and innovation going on, but sheesh. Talk about indulgent annoyance rock. If Robert Plant would never sing during the songs and Jimmy Page would almost never solo, then sometimes they'd be listenable.

I do admit I am probably amplifying my distaste for them partly because I tend to hold greater contempt when something is "supposed to" be good, and isn't. They aren't THAT bad, excepting Plant's ear-wrenching squeals. Just that they are a ton worse than what they are given credit for.

Hey there, John. I can sympathize with you a bit on the Plant singing-style thing (my gripe is that, in lieu of an abundance of written lyrics, the man delivers a excess of "baby" this and "darlin'" that), but Jimmy Page was a guitar-rock genius. I'm curious, what albums of theirs have you tried listening to? Seriously, Zep was as ground-breaking as practically any rock band before or since.

he was a man of his times, largely influenced by blues. sure, there are a lot of 'baby', 'babe' and 'darlin' in some songs, but then you have songs like 'No Quarter.'

man that picasso guy, he had this one series of paintings.. it was just like all blue and stuff. what the hell? get some other colours d00d!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree that I don't like Led Zeppelin it just seems like indulgence rock. It's the same reason I can't stand bands like Dream Theater and these prog rock bands. You want to talk about horrible try listening to Foreign Objects it's all instrumental stuff from the CKY guys before they were CKY where they spend about a half hour trying to impress people with how many notes they can play in rapid succession and how many time signatures they can switch between. As far as people I think are great guitar players I can never say enough about Robert Quine(Richard Hell and The Voidoids and Lou Reed "The Blue Mask" era) If you haven't heard his stuff definately check it out. Ok, I'm just rambling.

"Hey fuck you if you don't like it."
