I'm sure we all agree that Frank Black and Pixies have had quite an impact on music. We hear about various musicians namechecking Frank such as David Bowie, Kurt Kobain, Bono, P.J. Harvey, Eddie Vedder and many more. Its also pretty obvious that many bands ripped off both Pixies and Frank Black tunes in the past. I'm also sure that many of you out there may have differing opinions as to the nature of his influence on popular music and i'd like to know what they are. Personally, i think he had a pretty big impact on music , especially when you consider what kinds of music were popular at the time when the Pixies emerged and what kind of music was popular when they broke up. What do you Think?

I agree. I know lotsa bands quote at least the Pixies as a huge influence (I feel like I hear less about Frank himself being sited) and as it has already been stated elswhere they would be no Nirvana without the Pixies, not to mention many other bands I am sure.
Cool to think about in a specific way... |

Recently I've noticed a wave of emo-type bands and kind of lame indie-pop/punk bands all citing the Pixies, but in a way that makes me realize they don't know much about them. Rolling Stone has a different band's top 5 albums list every week, and every time one of the default pop-punk bands shows up, either "death to the Pixies" or "Doolittle" is always on their list. The fact they would choose Death to the Pixies makes me realize they're all just poseurs. It's like indie 101, you have to name check the Pixies, especially if you're in a whiny emo band. |

No question Frank/the Pixies are paramount to the development of music. They created a style which was picked up on and then moved music in a different direction, albeit, after the Pixies went their separate ways.
On the whole, I think Frank's music is the same thread and while he doesn't have the benefit of a marketing machine behind him I think his influence will be felt in a couple of music cycles. For me the very fact that his influences are so hard to spot gives credit to the fact he is creating something new. At the end of the day this type of thing produces the influnce which carries music...people will again go back to Frank to progress.
