I recently found out my girlfriend actyually liked the Aerosmith soundtrack for Armageddon, and also Brain Addams! Oh my god! What should I do?

When we first met, she told me she liked Nirvana, Bob Marley and REM, so I tought, yeah, that's not too bad (I'm not too fond of REM but I can respect them). She didn't really know Frank Black or the Pixies, but she seemed open to it.

But now I find out she likes Brain Addams! Summer of 69 really makes me puke. What next, maybe tomorrow she'll tell me she likes Bon Jovie!

I guess she didn't like the three artists/bands I mentioned above because she likes those genres, but only because they are popular.

Should I try not to care about this (which is very hard), or should I try to change her taste (maybe even harder)? Or should I dump her? This is killing me!

Could these bad tastes just be a fluke? Or do you think there is something inherent in her that MUST hear Bryan Adams, like RIGHT NOW!

As for dumping her, only you can say. How much do you talk with her about music - do you duke it out over Frank vs. Aerosmith? In that case, you may have to move on. Hmmm...

She thinks Brian is (her words) cool, handsome and writes good tunes. Gives me the shivers.

As for your question, I'm not familiar with "duking out over something" - English is not my primary language, so I'd appreciate it if you could explain what it means, or rephraze.

I really feel for you brother. I would dump her in half the beat of a heart.
There is no excuse to listen to shitty music.

I meant, are you getting in angry fights about music?

Duking it out means basically 'putting up your dukes' and dukes is another word (from where? Old Westerns?) for fists.

Basically I was asking if this has become a roadblock in your relationship and something you don't feel you could get over.

No it has not because I just recently found out. We were sitting in a bar, and there was some shitty music on, and me and a friend were going like 'what are they gonna play next, brian addams?' and my girlfriend overheard us, and asked "why are you bashing brian addams"... and I was, like, du-uh, why wouldn't I, isn't it obvious... apparanlty it isn't...

I mean, I have repsect for different tastes, after all who am I to judge what other people should listen to, but brian addams, that's pushing it. but at least she doesn't listen to justin timberlake or stuff like that. she has some notion of alternative music, but doesn't quite get it frankly.

we don't have fights about it, but internally I'm having some difficulties with this.

I feel your pain my friend. This is a conundrum I have considered at great length. Music is so essential and important to me, I don't know how I could date someone who had "bad" taste. It would be akin to her being wonderfull in every way, other than her extensive collection of and affinity for Nazi propaganda. I couldn't excuse that, I don't know if I can excuse bad musical taste.

So long as she doesn't like John Mayer I'd say get over it.

BUT
she also digs some cool stuff i play for her - she's still a musical child as i put it and i need to ween her off her sippy cup and start giving her more real music. hey she liked the new sigur ros record and thats pretty non-mainstream and i think she said once she really likes "here comes your man" - it's a start i guess...
-Brian
ps. her taste in everything else (especially boyfriends :) ) is really good - hell she buys me dave eggers books and loves spike jonze

Uh, you're actually considering breaking up with a girl due to different tastes in music?

Riiiiiight. Maybe some of you take music a little TOO seriously here. It's only rock and roll, folks.

sometimes music speaks volumes about a person's personality. Only rock and roll! BAH!

I think it obviously depends on the person. Some have religion, others have music - it can be a very big deal if it is important to you.

If the girl likes at least a couple groups that you do, then perhaps in time you can sway her away from whatever you want to get her off of.

I have to agree somewhat with James though. I mean, considering breaking up with a girl just because she likes Brian Adams? Dude at least it's not Barbara Streisand or Celene Dion. Now if a girl likes strictly R & B or rap music, then I think that speaks alot about a girl. That type obviously is not for the rock 'n' roller.

Heh, actually I am an MC myself :)
I'm not really into R&B but there's some real good hiphop out there!

Just so you know, I haven't broken up with her yet, even though I still have problems with her taste. The thing is, my previous girlfriend (with whom I've been for 5 years) did also have, in my opinion, a bad taste for music (commercial trance and house, ricky martin, ...), and that caused at least some problems in our relationship. I would just prefer a girl that likes the same kind of stuff that I like for a change...

BTW, speedy_m, that nazi-stuff was a real cool way of putting it, even if I don't consider having a bad musical taste as bad as being a nazi. Funny nevertheless.

Well, I can't blame you, because that IS the essence of hiphop, and real MC's know it.

Yeah, and it's not hard to find. For instance, Eminem. He might have mayor commercial success, but you have to admit the man's got skills, and he has good lyrics (that doesn't mean everyone has to agree with him, they're just well written, nice rhyme-schemes and stuff). BTW, anyone seen 8 mile? Is it worth seeing (it's about to be released in Belgium, or maybe it already is, I don't know)

No you haven't, but I love Soulwax, and their other projects as well. Their "2 many DJ's" project rocks. The Flying Dewaele Brothers (the two brothers behind Soulwax) released a mix-CD under that name where they mix and remix just about anything. Check it out here : http://www.2manydjs.org/ - song songs really suck, but it's incredible what they have done with them. But I must say, I prefer Soulwax over their DJ stuff.

Yeah, on Eminem. But what I think sets him apart is his rhythm. The totally inventive way he moves the words around.

As for Brian Adams...I have a friend in Switzerland who I am interested in a vis versa and to make a long story short she likes Brian Adams as well...She likes Franks too but should one recoil in horror from a true Brian Adams fan? It must be a Euro thing see this thread started in Belgium.

In addition, while living in the UK at least twice a night Summer of 69 would be blasted and the people went mad...is it a form of mind control?

Out on the Eisenhower, well, I lost my speed just a little bit south of a town called weed...

Yeah, here in Belgium, on parties (not quality ones, but regular ones), they always play Summer of 69 (and grease as well) at least once... That might explain why I hate Brian Addams so much...

Hey, are you kidding me? She rocks. Have you seen her on the Simpsons (Ow now! Barbra Streisnd!) and Southpark (Mecha Streisand)? She's funny... What do you mean, I do NOT have difficulties seperating fiction from reality!

I have an open mind about all music. Its what keeps me sane when my bloke who got me into the Pixies and Muses goes into a major sulk over the whole issue of not being allowed to play any swing or R N B but there's a list of things I am banned from including playing old 60's stuff, Hendrix.

I'm open-minded about all genres of music too, but not about all artists. I do admit Brian Addams has at least some talent (probably more than me), but his songs just suck.

Then you must buy her a walkman for Christmas silly boy - then you shall both know peace.

At least, that was the compromise my bloke and I reached over this issue; 60's/early 80's/music I'd be ashamed of if I had any sense at all is strictly walkman only territory.

In this way he can listen to whatever miss dynamitey or the wu tan clan bash out next without working my last nerve...

Well, I'm going to break up with her anyway. But not because of the music thing, it's just not working out anymore for me, and I'm sure she feels the same way too.
