I've got a few things about Black Francis melodies to get off my chest (out of my ears). These songs have parts that sound familiar to me (like specific other songs)... anybody else notice them? Any others I've missed? Am I going crazy or is it just you, daddy?
-Fiddle riddle "Don't know how this whole thing started" -The section in "Palace of the Brine" where he sings "I saw the cloning of the famous family" mirrors a Jesus and Mary Chain chorus (we know he's a fan, could be an omage) -"Bird Dream", where he sings "in the mountain" sounds like something classic...
And here's two sections of songs (pixies) that I think capture the essence of other bands that came later... (note Nirvana is not included, too obvious) -"Letter to Memphis" breakdown "And all these sirens they make me mad" ...Smashing Pumpkins -"Velouria" where he sings "every- my velouria" w/ the guitar... weezer (coincidentally after i noticed this they covered the song) Anybody see it?
That was longer than I thought.

Fiddle Riddle- does that line go w/ that song? It's been a while since I last listened to Teenager, so I could be erroneously suspicious.
Bird Dream- I don't know. I think that's just 'cuz it's a classic. I similarly had a dejavu-esque feeling when I first heard Dizzy by Throwing Muses. (Charles sorta sounds like Richard Simmons on the song's chorus, I think.)
Letter To Memphis- There's a lyrical connection here. Are you maybe alluding to a song on the first SP album?
My two bits... |

"Don't know how this whole thing started..." is actually from Big Red, which seems to be a seriously underrated song, based on what I've seen.
I think there's a little bit of "Chopsticks" in Fiddle Riddle, but I doubt that's what Stop Tap Spin was thinking of.

I agree on the "don't know how this whole thing started", that always sounded familiar to me.
What Jesus and Mary Chain song are you talking of? I'm a big fan, but it never occurred to me. Now that i think about it...i can kind of picture it.
I actually thought there were a lot of Mary Chain moments on Trompe, though not direct melodies. Just the way he sings, in kind of a nasally croon, like the two Reeds/Reids, Jim and Lou. I love it though. |

I think when you're as prolific as FB and have such an eclectic writing style as Frank does, you're bound to stumble across a familiar sounding melody now and then. I doubt he's really quoting anything specific. It's sort of like being able to see the face of Christ on a tree; if you look hard enough, you'll see it. |

Since the first listen of Trompe Le Monde, I always thought "Lovely Day" could be a Doors song. The way Charles sings "But I'll send you money...I'll send you lots of money..." almost seems like a direct Jim Morrison impression.

The End Of Speedy Marie Where Frank goes "She Is That Mo-Wost Lovely Art" Reminds me of some old Steve Miller Band Like Serenade or one of those cooler songs
Goodbye - I'm blowing a kiss to you So long - Wonderful being you Good Night - We'll soon be sleeping on the fields of marigold |
