Well, sort of, in the shape of Mclusky. I've just bought their latest album, Mclusky Do Dallas, and was amazed how close they sound to early Pixies - original sounding songs, similar guitar sounds, Black Francis-type screaming, and acoustics as though they're playing in your house. And surprise surprise - it was produced by Steve Albini! It might sound from what I'm saying that they're a Pixies rip-off band. Well, they're not, but you could imagine the Pixies playing some of their stuff a few years ago. I'd advise anyone who loves Surferrosa and Come On Pilgrim to check this band out, unless you've become sensitive to noise and earthy lyrics over the years! Anyone else here heard them?

I really really like Do Dallas (pain and sadness has its moments) still yet to see them live. Anyway onto what one of the guys from mclusky said about Frank in an interview:
Speaking of the multitasking rock-star, if you all had your own side projects, what would they sound like?
JON: Um, like my current side project. A bit like the Violent Femmes...
ANDY: Mine would sound more like Frank Black --- but Black Frances- Frank Black… before he started sucking.
I like the interview Jo very amusing. |

I really think this is a second-rate---if not, third rate---band. Sorry to say it, guys. Thanks for the suggestion, though; I know it was well-intentioned. I'd stick with bands like Les Savy Fav, Trail of the Dead and Modest Mouse if you want to see how the Pixies exert their influence on present-day music. |

Well as good as those 3 bands are I prefer noise rock and they don't come much better than Mclusky. Some of my favourite pixies songs are the heavier noisy ones like Something Against You, Rock Music, Tame etc. Mclusky seem to borrow that sort of style and couple it with silly lyrics. They don't want to change the world they are just putting out entertaining noisy songs for those who wanna hear it.

I think Mclusky are supporting Radio 4 at La Scala, King's Cross on 25th Feb. It's sold out now, but I would have got tickets if I lived a bit nearer London. Radio 4 sound a great band. Their album "Gotham!" is fantastic. 2 brilliant bands for the price of 1.....you don't get gigs like that often.
