I hear Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars. 5 STARS? I haven't heard it myself but come on, 5 STARS? We know how reliable Rolling Stone reviews are!

So, is it similar to Mutations (I love that album). |

I've had it a few weeks now..
Didn't like it the first few times. I was expecting something like Mutations.
The key word is SUBTLE. (At least, for Beck.)
Very low-key, not too quirky, but i'm really starting to love it.
Very acoustic, but nothing like Mutations, imo.
Definately worth-while. Very different for Beck. (I still prefer his fucked-up acoustic shit like One Foot in the Grave, but this just different from that.)

Jeremy bought it yesterday (I'm ALWAYS talking about Jeremy...) and we got to hear the first song in the car...It sounds nothing like any Beck I've ever heard. From the first listen, first song, I don't see how that album could warrant 5 stars, but then again the rest of the album could be amazing... |

From what I've heard so far is that it's a lot more mellow than anything he has done, but I have yet to hear all of it. |

Anyone else here hates Nigel Godrich? Beck's new songs are really cool, but I really think they're ruined by Godrich's lame production. It would have been much better if produced by the guy who did the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi (Dave Fridmann).

I dunno, it seems to me Yoshimi is mastered waaay too high, take it easy on the L2! (Kinda sounds distorted..digital clipping is occurring..)
Beck is usually in on all the steps of his recordings, i'd be surprised if this wasn't the effect he wanted...

Just saw this on the Lips email list, thought it might be of interest:

Beck, Flaming Lips Gear Up for Tour
Flaming Lips bassist Michael Ivans says he is eager to hit the road with Beck for a two-week jaunt beginning in October (with a second round of dates to follow in November). Already touted as one of the most anticipated tours of the fall due to its unique structure — the Lips will open all shows, then serve as Beck's backing band — tickets have sold out already in most markets.
Both bands have new albums out — two of the best albums released so far this year. The Lips' latest, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Warner Bros.), was released in July, while Beck's new album, Sea Change (Geffen), was released Tuesday (Sept. 24).
When their manager got a call from Beck's representatives this past summer, the group was flabbergasted. "Beck wants to do some shows or a tour with us as his backing band," Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd told Neumu in late June. "The possibilities are pretty fascinating."
Speaking from a break in rehearsals this week, Ivans shared some insight on the tour's evolution, its inception and what fans might expect. "Wayne [Coyne, the band's lead singer/songwriter] said, 'OK, look at your watch, and [in] five minutes our lives will be changed,' " said Ivans recalling the day they got the news. "And I remember the actual moment, and we had no idea what it was going to be. It just sort of seemed — whew, this is going to be something here — and we got the news that Beck wanted to do this tour, and not just have it be, OK, the Flaming Lips open up and then Beck comes on and plays. We'll just scoot our gear around and then stay onstage and play with Beck."
The Lips didn't take long to make a decision. "It was an immediate 'Of course we'll do it,' " Ivans said. "And then of course once you agree to do it then you start thinking, 'Oh my God, what have we gotten ourselves into?' Sitting in rehearsals here, and he'll just start playing, and you just sit there and go, 'Wow, that's Beck right there, playing songs.'"
Ivans says that the Lips' adoration of Beck's music significantly colored the group's decision to participate. The band has been rehearsing already for "five or six days," with plans to reconvene after a brief break to rehearse the full show more in the coming weeks.
As for the song selection at the shows, Ivans is still unsure about what will make the set lists each night. "I think that it will probably be pretty heavy on the newer stuff," he said. "And some of the songs that everyone likes, and of course, I use 'everyone' including us as well. But that will be the weird, sort of fine line that we walk. I don't think that we, or even Beck, really wants to get into actually deconstructing the songs so much that we play the whole set and people would walk away and go, 'Wow, I saw a show and I have no idea what songs they played.' Right now we're sort of enmeshed in actually just trying to figure out the songs and trying to remember one song to the next song," Ivans said, laughing.
For the Beck tour, the Lips, typically a trio that includes Ivans on bass, Coyne on lead vocals and Drozd on drums, keyboards and guitar, will include auxiliary members. A friend of the band will take over drums, allowing Drozd to focus primarily on guitars; a new keyboard player is on board as well. "It seemed like it would help flesh out things a little bit, instead of it having to be where people are going to be running around so much," Ivans said. "[Steven] felt that having a keyboard player there with us would let him concentrate more on just playing mostly guitar. He'll still play keyboards here and there, but to sort of give everyone a job in a way. It will sort of, in a weird way, be more conventional than, say one of our shows. But then at the same time, it's just so weird...."
The band is surprised by the amount of advance press the tour has received. "It's kind of weird because, I mean, we're all fans of music and we're always reading magazines and watching MTV — so it's kind of strange to actually be a part of something that usually you just hear about on MTV news or read about in a magazine. Hopefully this will live up to the hype."
Tour dates and other info can be found at Beck's web site. — Brian Orloff [Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002] ] |

Beck & Smokey Hormel Video at: http://kcrw.com/smil/Beck3.ram
Just him and Smokey(steel guitar) playing for what looks like 37mins. Excellent vid/audio for Real Player.
Beck looks so..different...
If you're a Beck fan, don't miss this.

I heard some of it in the local record store about a week ago. For some odd reason, it reminded me a lot of Big Star's Third, which happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time.

I like Sea Change, but it's far from perfect. My main problem is the actual sound of the record, the mixing? I've heard acoustic music RECORDED so much better than this. Was Nigel Godrich really a great choice to produce an acoustic album? |

i'm a pretty big beck guy (mostly the earlier stuff - MELLOW GOLD is my fav. Beck album) and their tour with The Flaming Lips sounds too good to be true. but it sucks because the venues are going to be too huge. i guess that's what happens..
it's at the Wiltern here in LA so either you pay like 400 dollars to get a decent, assigned (lame) seat, or it's going to be nosebleed city.. which is no way to see a show.
i was lucky enough to catch the Lips for their Soft Bulletin tour in 2000, and that was undoubtedly one of the best shows i've ever seen. not only for how good they sounded, but the whole bizarre 60's style psychadelic performance art thing.. fake blood, people in rabbit suits, confetti. it was so fun. (having several shots of Jack didn't hurt either).. i'm sure putting their minds together with Beck will produce some wonderfully convoluted results.
also, about SEA CHANGE... the thought occured to me the other day.. since it's recorded live to 2 track (am i right?) maybe Beck is taking a cue from Frank and that's why he's trying it out?? it's a stretch maybe, but who knows.. i know Beck is a fan and they do have the Lyle connection..

I know Sea Change wasn't recorded straight-up, it's a standard studio album. (How else can Beck harmonize with himself. ;)

wow, its rare to find a beck fan who really appreciates MELLOW GOLD. it's my favourite too. SEA CHANGE has kind of disappointed me so far, but seeing so many people praise it means i'll certainly be listening to it more to try and pick up on something. |
