/updated/

just walked in the door, figured id post before i forgot things.
first the setlist
gouge away
DITS
ive seen your picture
cactus
i want rock and roll
crackity jones
thalassocracy
Steak and Sabre
Bullet
"Dirty old town" (didnt know this one)
Nadine
Manitoba
Monkey gone to heaven
Jane, queen of love
wave of mutilation
666
how you went so far
horrible/beautiful day
solid gold
MIB
southbound bevy
whiskey in your shoes
john the revelator
cold heart of stone
shrimp song
farewell bend
blackrider

Encore
solo Mr Grieves

turnout wasnt too shabby, people started to leave as it got past 1 and he started playing slower songs, not that i would blame them if you arent a real frank black fan, but obviously it was worth it to stay.

the performace was quite good as expected. the sound quality was very good(though i was wearing earplugs which may have helped) and i could hear all the instruments very clearly. Rich was as flamboyant as ever, dave M seemed as exceited to be there as ever, Scott B played excellently with his fancy cowboy hat, and Dave P randomly left the stage to return with a cigarette. I thought he had quit or something becuase he hadnt pulled one out after the first few songs and just as i thought that he reached into the pocket.

highlights were probably i want rock and roll, horrible day, solid gold, and Men in Black. Frank had some acoustic guitar issues near the end, it kept buzzing and he was visibly pissed. although it was odd that he decided to continue playing acoustic driven songs like shrimp song and cold heart of stone right after.

the only other downside i can think of is that it was pretty damn long (with 3 opening acts). length to franks set i enjoy but the other bands could have been a little less. the concert didnt start till 9 and didnt finish till 1:30.

the RPTrio and the bennies were both interesting though it was hard to tell what was going on musically for the bennies becuase of a mixing issue and becuase jeremy used distortion a lot. Lovering was very entertaining and brief which was a good combination, the magical vortex thing was very nice.

also, the instore at tower was quite cool. he (frank of course) was yaking away and seemed in great spirits. I got my poster from the TCOR sleeve autographed and a picture with frank that ill upload when i can scan it. at the instore he played (not exact order)

shrimp song
bullet
manitoba
nadine
horrible day
mr grieves
crackity jones
whiskey in your shoes
All My Ghosts
and cactus (maybe one more)

All My Ghosts was pretty funny becuase at the one verse he like stopped sorta and started playing it slower and it seemed like he had forgotton the words becuase it was like 3/4 speed and he was looking confused. although he did comment a couple times about how he had several beers before the show so perhaps that would explain it. and he played like the first few chords of shrimp song and we started looking around at all the surprised faces because lets face it that song is pretty cheesy and he started laughing and hes like "i just like this song!" and he sand the next line which was about a mama shrimp and started laughing again, which was funny i thought. Someone from tower i guess also made this Frank Black backdrop thing and it had this lightning bolt on it which he apparently couldnt get enough up so kudos to whoever came up with that perhaps someone on here.

also, i got to meet several people from abstract plain and i met useyourname and El Barto from here so that was cool too. My friends were making fun of me because at one point a new person(one of the board members) was walking up to me every min. well im sure the other people that went will have something to add also. have a good one

oh i almost forgot, my girlfriend saw frank black shirtless, he was changing (just his shirt) in the back of his van (which looks new), as we were driving by to go home (couldnt stay to meet him afterwards, way too late).

That is a wicked set list. Not too shabby at all! Sounds like it was a serious day of Frank Bradbury.

Excellent miked! Dirty Old Town is by famous old (and lamentably late)folkie Ewan MacColl. Cooking Vinyl, Frank's UK label, have a number of Ewan's CDs - Frank seemed to start playing Dirty Old Town when he joined the label - and also mentioned Bert Jansch in interview - another Cooking Vinyl artist. Ewan was the father of singer Kirsty MacColl who died tragically recently, and used to occasionally appear with the Pogues, who popularised Dirty Old Town, which was where I came in. I think i'll stop now.

ahh thanks for the info TP if you dont mind me calling you that, it was a pretty cool song, though i was hoping it was a new one and we were perhaps the first to experience it haha. it sorta fit with his new stuff which is pretty awesome, especially with the full band.

he played Dirty Old Town in Chicago, last april. He started playing the swimmer but he forgot the lyrics. he said "we'll try it again tomorrow. let's play some simple folk song now", and the got into Dirty Old Town.

Hey guys sorry I missed you all somehow! It was a terrific show. The in-store was unbelievable, better than the actual show in my opinion because it was just so intimate and Frank was really talkative and laughing and constantly smiling. Told lots of little 'stories', like "We had Middle-Eastern for lunch, that was kind of a band activity". I'm still collecting my thoughts, so I'll add more when I have time. Thanks for posting the setlist Miked, I decided to just have fun and not worry about notes for a change. But now I'm trying to remember all the little things that were mentioned, like the Kevlar part! "Gortex??? No, Teflon? No! Kevlar, yeah that's it!"

Good times, great memories, and he drew the alien face on my fb.net notebook! Totally cool!

haha well he got stuck on "kevlon" at first and everyone kept shouting at him that it was kevlar haha that was funny

oh yah i remembered how the version of 666 they played was awesome last night, it was more like the original than the slow "power" version but it just went really well for whatever reason.

Sounds like another great show thanks for the set list. Some say its wrong to want to know the set list but, it gives you the depth of a mood. He changes songs every night yes there is a core of songs but it grows. Thanks Again.

If the Warsaw show is half as good as this show sounds, I'll be pleased! I was thinking of making the trip to Philly, but it just was impossible. The set-list is near perfect as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks for the set list, I was also at the TLA show, have to agree very good show, but by the time Frank came on (11:15?) we were already tired (show started at 9:00)

Highlight of the night for me was "monkey gone to heaven". Just Frank and two steel guitars, no drums or bass. Sonically (sp) very interesting.

It was cool walking around south street before the show, saw the band walking around (said hi to rich gilbert) Got a look at Frank's new van. Very strange custom thing, the entire back is a giant door. We were laughing because all it needed was fur and ears and it would pass for the van from "dumb & dummer".
