This came from www.pixieslive.com;
12/xx/89, Saturday Night Live, New York, NY Notes: See xx/xx/89 date.
So it appears they played, but it either never aired or no one has seen it sence it's first airdate.
Anyone have any info on this?

Yeah. I am 95% sure I saw this show either live and/or rerun. I remember because at the time I had no idea who they were, and me and my little brother could not understand a damn word he was saying so we made fun of the show for months. Something must have impacted us!

I'm surprised I've never seen it rerun on Comedy Central. Maybe I'll be able to catch it soon--oh wait, Comedy Central replaced SNL with MADTV, jesus wept.. |

I just checked through my copy of Saturday Night Live: the First Twenty Years from 1995(yes, I actually own that...I'm so very ashamed) and the musical guest for december 1989 were the following:
12/2/89 - k.d. lang 12/9/89 - Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville 12/16/89 - Tracy Chapman
I would assume that the remaining two saturdays of that month weren't broadcast days. The 23rd would have most likely been their christmas clip show special and the 30th was probably a repeat, in light of the upcoming holiday.
I checked through the musical guest for every year that they were around, and I find the pixies listed no where, so it looks like that listing was a mistake. Prehapes they were scheduled to play but had to pull out. Who knows?

No offense, but those pages are way out of date - they're version 1.0 of what now is 4.1 (www.pixieslive.com, check the Notes section). That said, the "12/xx/89" on our page might indeed be wrong.

I know they played SNL. I just asked my brother what the name of that group was on SNL that we could not understand a word of and were really heavy compared to what we used to listen to, and he said, "oh, The Pixies? yeah I remember that."

It seems they played "Monkey Gone To Heaven". However it seems no one has ever seen it or they saw it once.
On a side note I am also pissed about CC replaceing SNL with MAD TV. MAD TV blows.

No dudes, listen. I saw them on SNL. When I say I am 95% sure, I mean I am so sure that I would bet 950 dollars on it. In fact, I am so sure I saw them play SNL way back when that I retract my 95% certainty, and raise it to 99%. (ooooo!)

Never on SNL. They were on a late night NBC show hosted by David Sanborn in 1989 called Night Music but not SNL. |

Damn. My brother and I are wrong about seeing the Pixies on SNL. If only I had researched. We must have seen the Pogues in early 1990 and mistakenly recalled them as the Pixies. I am embarrassed for my bravado! And foolhardy with my money!

yeah, The New Bolero is right, it was Night Music. they played "monkey" & "tame". i think i have a crappy recording of it as filler on a video tape somewhere. |

Yup, they played "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Tame" on Night Music. Great show, too bad it didn't last very long. It was apparently the first time the Pixies had appeared on network TV in North America (before Letterman, Dennis Miller, etc.) I'm quite certain that they did not appear on SNL as I would've known (back then) for sure :-) I managed to record their performance on Night Music when it first aired. I thought I had forever lost the tape which had this but I happily found it about a year ago when digging through old storage at my parent's place. Here's a couple screen caps from their appearance on that show.
