ohh you need to find out more about NMH - they're wonderful - managed to see them live a few times... pretty damn fine

going back to NMH after listening to bands like the Mountain Goats, I hadn't realised how close they sound.. and funnily enough, tMG cover a NMH song (think it was 'two-headed boy', but I can't find the link any more)

I actually discovered NMH through that MG cover too. I really don't think they sound at all alike though.

Has anyone got the new MG album "We Shall All Be Healed" yet? It's really good.

I think i'm possibly the only NMH fan alive who doesn't also like the Mountain Goats. I've given them several tries, but just can never get into them.
I do, however, love the Decemberists.. the other band always compared to NMH.

I just listened to "July, July" and "Cocoon" by The Decemberists and I don't see how they sound like NMH. I also don't really like them but they're not bad.

When was the last time NMH released an album? 1998? They're long overdue. I knoew Magnum or Mangnum or whatevers Jeff's last name is has moonlighted in all sorts of other stuff, but it's been too long since a proper NMH record was released.

Having said that, I've never got into them too much. I like the abrasive, shambolic sound of NMH (two adjectives ALWAYS used to describe NMH) and the lyrics are nice and Dada-ist, and he's got a cool voice, but there's plenty of stuff that's along the same lines that I'd rather listen to, like Guided By Voices, Silver Jews, early Ween. And there's a lot of music I'd rather listen to than that stuff, since I've listened to plenty of it. I've been listening to some Sly again lately, some Ui, Cheap Trick, Carole King.

I just bought my 3rd copy of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea last monday. Dammit.
Mr. Mangum apparently wrote a bunch of songs as a follow up, but wasn't happy with them. Ain't been nuthin' since.
SWITCHY: I don't like the Mountain Goats either.
The Jeff Mangum "Live From Jittery Joes" cd is good food, too.

They broke up. Anyone even remotely interested in Neutral Milk Hotel or what Jeff Magnum has been doing in the meantime should click this link http://www.atlanta.creativeloafing.com/2003-09-04/cover_news.html and read this very interesting article. I'd cut and paste it here but it's long, and if you actually click you will be rewarded with some nifty accompanying photos.

good first album? well 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' I'd say, but that's cause I'm lazy and still haven't got around to getting 'On Avery Island' yet... (I did have ITAOTS when it came out though...)

and back to tMG - I only really heard the similarities after the last album, then going back to NMH.. it had never occurred to me before then

In my book,In The Aeroplane... is Nuetral Milk Hotel's apex, and probably the best place to start. I don't think I would have liked Avery Island as much if I had started there.
A very kind person sent me wobbly sounding cdrs of the pre-Avery Island cassette releases. There some good songs, and good noise as well. You also get to hear how some songs, like Up And Over, developed over time.

I've never much liked On Avery Island. Only 'Song Against Sex' and 'Naomi' really stand out, IMO.

ITAOTS, on the other hand, seems very, um, full. Each song is wonderful and haunting.

Is 'Oh Sister' on the Jeff Mangum live release? (My wife loves it. He mentions that it was never included in a release and was a follow-up to another song. Anyone know?)

OBW, it was a follow up to "Oh Comely", and can be found in live mp3 form
here: http://www.elephant6.com/sound/neutral.html but there are currently no circulating studio versions.
