Today's random song of the day is Le Cigare Volant.
What do you think of it?
lyrics We played a battle raged Me and my brother Dragged the American flag in the mud 'Cause that was our druthers They were fine and simple days like no other
Le Cigare Volant it's true once was above us We wondered was he hate or someone that loved us In the years since we have grown up to know this
Got this feeling in our bones For the icon we were shown It took us twenty years to learn The sacred imagery has burned We can't escape It was a childhood fate
Oh so silently he shined And so, say we, devine And we wandered on the hill And we wonder if he will Come back We wait
I will postulate It was a childhood fate

You mean Le Cigare Volant, I guess...
A funny, catchy song - one of my faves on SSMVGD.
Btw, I wonder why Frank gave it a French name. Maybe he found the lyrics too explicit and wanted to add some mystery?... |

This song = Clash Springsteen. Or maybe just the Rolling Stones. I love this song. Frank needs to put it on Oddballs 2.
Le Cigare Volant is also the name of a wine. And we all know Frank likes to refer to wine. And the wine (thank you, google!) was "named for a 1954 French law forbidding the landing of flying saucers in the vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape". |

Unidentifed Flying Objects appears to be the subject matter of the lyrics.
Le Cigare Volant = flying cigar |

I love this song! The whole story part of it is very cool, I think. It should defintely be put on a "real" album along with my favorite, Pan American Highway.

I always took this song to be about Frank's religious school experiences. And I think that line that starts "In the years since" ends "we have though often of this" He and his brother dealing with the spookier side of god and the vengeful/loving duality of him "Is he hate or someone who loves us"? The (religious) icons they were shown, how it gave them a spooky feeling... etc.
There was another topic somewhere a while back where I said more about this, but I can't find it right now! Maybe its gone. Anyway, I love this song and think it isn't about a flying saucer but GOD. "We wonder if he will come back" -- if Jesus will like the nuns (I assume) taught them (those same nuns he imaged having sex with 'at my school') Anyway, given Franks other relgious tendencies, this was my reading.
Alienation confers freedom. Obscurity will keep you pure. Pray that you won’t be discovered young, so that you won’t be tempted to sell out early, or won’t be seduced by celebrity.

This is an awesome song with great energy...the first time I heard it on SSMVGD, it grabbed me immediately.
I can see how the lyrics are about both religious and UFO subject matter. After all, what is more earth-shattering to the dogma of religion/Christianity than the introduction of life outside of this "sphere" of our Earth? |

I think this is one of the tunes that should definitely have made it to an A-Side. It's such a wonderful song...when I listened to SSMVGD for the first time in a while, the song made me flip.

it has power you feel something when he sings 'I took us twenty years to learn' and you think I'm gonna sing this line everyday don't care with it means it just took us twenty years to learn although I'm only 19 years yet!

Many songs from SSMVGD should have ended as A-sides. Some did actually, but Pan Am Highway and Le Cigare Volant should really have appeared on albums. Cigare is a fantastic song, and the acoustic version ain't bad either.

My fave on SSMVGD (with pan am highway of course). It has such a "FB feeling" that it's an instant classic. Could have been on Teenager. |
