Black Letter Days/Devil's Workshop - Frank Black and The Catholics - Spin Art
Did you hear that Frank Black put out two albums at the same time?
Frank Black....
the guy who used to be in The Pixies.
Yes he's still playing. He's got an amazing band called The Catholics and...
No, I don't know if they are. Catholic also means "Of broad or liberal scope, comprehensive"...
Well, they certainly play their ass off.
Yes, they play guitars and pedal steel and keys and drums and bass... all that and they record straight to 2 track...
Well, it means that they can't overdub. If they fuck up, they have to start all over. It's a real ballsy way to record because what you hear is what you get...
Yeah and I think it's even better than the Pixies.
I swear...it's like...
This acoustic scrape. Woody sounding. Real. Hot. Sandy. Wheels on the road. The sounds of your car.
Crisp.
Black wraparound sunglasses.
Riddles. But the kind that reveal the answers.
A punch in the face. Sweaty.
Drugs. Not the messy, nasty ones though. GOD's good drugs.
Calling, but no one answers. No one picks up the phone.
Tumbling tumbleweeds.
Romantics.
Mexican food and mexican beer.
Gibsons and Fenders and Voxs and tubes...orange and blue....and tweed.
Something hurts in the heart because you remember something that you miss, and you can't remember it exactly, but you don't want to forget it.
It doesn't even exist, yet there it is.
So what do I think? You want a review? If you want the Pixies, go back and listen to them. They left some recordings. I prefer Frank Black and the Catholics.

Actually, I don't think it is bad at all. I think it was done in a very creative, lighthearted way. I like it, it's kind of cute, if you don't mind the expression.
For what it's worth, that's my opinion, Zan

Yes, I was trying to kind of convey a feeling when your listening to the albums. What it boils down to.
I was trying to play with the whole idea of a "review".
They used it in http://www.popshot.net

OK, not to be a party pooper (sp?), but it doesn't really tell you much ABOUT the album. and it is obsessed with the Pixies. I don't see why a review should adress the Pixies AT ALL. I mean, OK, if you're writing a comperative analysis of an Artist's development. But it ain't that. As far as I'm concerned, writing 'This is much better than the Pixies' is about as useful as writing 'This is way worse'.
A good review should be about the SONGS. I mean, you haven't mentioned one of them. The review should describe what the album is like, so that people will know if they wanna listen to it or not, and/or the album should be adiscussion of the music, made to enhance the enjoyment of people who listened to it or deal with the content of the art.

Thanks. I agree with a lot of that. I tried something that I never tried before with that. It's weird and it's NOT right, but it was different and You and the others have provided the right kind of feedback.
I tire of reading about the Pixies in a Frank Black review. Sometimes, it's necessary though to introduce him. I had to concede to that. I do not agree that it was all about the pixies.
Part of it was also a challenge. Can you give a sense without stating it rote and directly? I didn't want to talk about individual songs, I wanted the sense of the whole endeavor.
