Dean's post before made me think about weird place names, and i am interested in hearing some.
i know Australia has some crackers, but i didn't know that Canada also.

back home in New Zealand we have some good'uns as well.
including the longest place name (well strickly, it depends on who you ask) of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu
which translates from Maori to English as the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater,' played his flute to his loved one.

and no, thats not me in the cardie!

another one that's actually very near to where i grew up is Waikikamoocow. (hint: say it aloud)
oddly, on a recent trip to Brighton we walked past a restaurant that was called this.

..

There's a place in Wales called:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Translated:

"The church of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and near St. Tysilio's church by the red cave".

There's a salt factory near here which takes their name from the NWA song "Compton's in the house". The place is called: Claimin' My City, It's My City They Claim, Motherfuckers We About to Put Some Salt in Your Game"

That's obviously a total lie.

I think I said this one before but....

Headsmashedinbuffalojump, Alberta, Canada.

http://whc.unesco.org/sites/158.htm

In south-west Alberta, the remains of marked trails and an aboriginal camp, and a tumulus where vast quantities of buffalo (American Bison) skeletons can still be found, are evidence of a custom practised by aboriginal peoples of the North American plains for nearly 6,000 years. Using their excellent knowledge of the topography and of buffalo behaviour, they killed their prey by chasing them over a precipice; the carcasses were later carved up in the camp below.

Paducah, Podunk, Monkey's Elbow, Possum Trot, Gobbler's Knob, Beaverlick, and Big Bonelicks, all in Kentucky.

Booger's Holler, Tennessee.

As a side note, FBnet seems to be acting as some kind of strange synchronicity vortex, between dreaming about peyote/Aldous Huxley and the southwest US the night before the song oracle hands out "Llano del Rio" to doing a google for a weird place name in Kentucky that I was trying to recall, and as a result finding this web page http://www.zug.com/scrawl/textrip/day2.html . This kind of thing always makes me feel like I should be paying extra careful attention - but to WHAT?

From seeing Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell, I have learned there must be a Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania.

I grew up in Wiskey Harbour, just outside of Pike Bay, not too far from Ferndale and Lion's Head. Moved to Wiarton, and went to school in Owen Sound.

All near Mar, Oliphant, Hepworth, Shallow Lake and Sauble Beach.

A guy that I worked with was telling me there is a liquor store in Ypsilanti, Michigan called Liqua's Quicka (I'm not exactly sure how they spell it, but I know it's very phonetic). He said that lots of homeless alcoholics sit outside hoping to get money, but many of them don't want to directly beg for change, so whenever a customer is walking up to the door, one of them will say loudly to another, "Man, if I had a 40, I'd be set for the day."

I used to live near Nether Wallop in Hampshire, I don't know if 'wallop' means anything in America. Suffice to say, as far as I know there's no sordid bondage-related shenanigans going on there, but I may be wrong. Its not far down the road from Dummer, either.
