I do realise that the Pixies are a far superior group but i still love the chilis. Admittedly, supporting someone on your reunion is pretty fuckin stupid but i just cant understand why everyone hates the chilis so much. Is it because they are to 'mainstream'? Being mainstream doesn't neccessarily mean you are bad. I've got my ticket to see the chilis in Manchester anyway and am happy as Larry. Now if only i could get my hands on a Pixies ticket life would be perfect. (I realise i have now lost any respect i had on this forum by admitting i like the chilis.)

Flea has been in some good movies.
I'm not a huge fan, but they have some great songs and they are all really talented. I saw them live a few years ago and the show was ok. But that was in an arena and I was in the nosebleed section.

Peppers were good when they played that funk rock of BloodSugarSeXMAgik....now the songs are too flamboyant for me. He definitely sings in a much "prettier way" nowadays |

I think that the musicians in the band are exceptional, especially for the rock world. Once again our man in Pedro, Mike Watt, brought them together on an album in which FB also appeared, "Ball Hog or Tugboat."
I think Frusciante's guitar playing is very beautiful at times. Their drummer, sadly I can't remember his name, is very good. Everybody knows Flea kicks ass on the bass. Mr. Kedis (spelling?) is not much of a vocalist but, hey, three out of four ain't bad. It's too bad that a lot of their songs just suck. To be honest, I really like "By The Way" and a few other songs off that album. The majority however are crap.
I understand why people slag them so much but really, to me, they do not completely suck. They aren't my favorite, but they do present some elements that I do enjoy. However I don't have much of an urge to see them live, and would rather not have to suffer through them to see the Pixies or, more likely, would not like to have to feel compelled to stay to see them to get more of my money's worth.

I've got that Mike Watt CD. It features FB, Flea, Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and many others.

They did have a good period but now they are pretty shit.
Stuarts right, they make crappy mainstream rock for teenagers, just like the the Foo Fighters (who used to be good but run out of steam after their second album).
As a last resort i would get RHCP tickets to see the Pixies but i would probably leave before the RHCP come on. |

I love the Chilipeppers. At least theyve earned their popularity (in the music biz for about 20 years). They were huge back when the pixies were originally together. I think its an appropriate matchup. At least they arent opening for some young trendy band, like evanescence or nickelback. |

I think it's a horrible matchup. Not necessarily a bad music matchup... but it would be sucky for Pixies fans because it would be hard to get tickets. The RHCP isn't official or confirmed is it?

It means becoming more like California, which is to say more fucked like California. I take to to mean more congested, more regulated, more taxed, more welfare, more politically correct, .... more fucked up. |

RHCP aren't too bad as far as mainstream rock goes.
The only album of theirs I will ever listen to/care for is BloodSugarSexMagick. Partially because it's a kickass rock-funk record, partially because of sentimental value and the memories it evokes, and partially because its the only album in their catalogue that I think is any good. (correction-- there are some good songs on Californication as well.)
But the bottom line is -- pre-BSSM Peppers are just a little too flamboyantly eighties-sounding, and post-BSSM Peppers began the slow de-evolution into mainstream "safeness" in terms of their sound.
Sir Psycho Sexy ... that song is hilarious. |

I've got two or three of their records. Quite like the Aeroplane song. Bought their latest but got bored with it very quickly. They rarely make it into the cd player.
Very, very middle of the road these days and pale into insignificance when compared to FB and the Pixies.

I love the Chili, but By The Way was a huge let down other than a select few songs. I love BloodSugarSexMagik, Californication, Mother's Milk and One Hot Minute (Navarro is god!) |

Aren't croutons those shitty little nuggets you get in cup a soup and a futon a lameass attempt at a sofa/bed crossbreed?! I guess all i will ever be is a guy in a rover, but at least i get to do cool shit like cruise around in my rover giving frank black directions. Bottom line is i love the chilis, and i think there is a lot of snobbery in places like this toward mainstream rock, as if liking bands who don't sell any records is really 'alternative'. Some people are lame.

the albums By The Way and Californication have both been played to death pretty much. My favourite song by the "new chilis" (just like new labour, gone are their roots to attract new fans) is "Cabron" because it sounds like whispering weeds. |

Grrrr...... Just because their music mellowed out and became more catchy doesn't mean they have abandoned their roots. It just means they now write better songs and consequently more people like them.
Would you stop liking the pixies if they became 'mainstream'? I fucking hope not.
