Well, seems like some people are getting a little huffy for GA show reviews, so I'll post a very *BRIEF* summary, since I just drove back to Tampa from Atlanta today. Sorry, no setlists; however, I will say that I think it's a mistake for those going to read these setlists prior to attending shows, since I wasn't surprised, and the setlists of both shows were virtually identitcal---not in order, but in content, with little changes here and there, but for the most part consistent with what's been reported before. No, no huge surprises, except the encores struck me as very long---about 7 songs, and the concerts easily ran over two hours. But they were great shows and I've never seen FB in such good form.
ATLANTA: Which was the best of the two? Hard to tell, but I think I preferred the Atlanta show. The band opened up with a barrage of hits---starting with Freedom Rock, sequing into Crackity Jones, throwing in Thallasocracy---an amazing sequence, and the place was electrified. Better yet, I was right up front and center in a very small and intimate venue. The usual middle-aged jackasses who only bobbed their heads in semi-time (depending on their levels of inebriation) with Pixies songs. Pixies songs played included Cactus, Wave of Mutilation, Crackity Jones and the pedal-steel version of Monkey Gone to Heaven. Highlight for me was the cover of John the Revelator---missing from the Athens show---and the opening ten minutes. Also, something unusual: I noticed there were times when both RIch Gilbert and Dave Phillips were both working different pedal steels simultaneously. Manitoba and Beautiful Day were both played as well. Some brief, amusing banter between the bandmates during the encore about their places of orgin since Phillips, evidently, is from Georgia.
In Athens, Met a few people from the bulletin board, but spent some time in particular with GIJoeWIthKungFuGrip and his wife (Chuck and Sheri), had a few laughs and a great time all around with them---hopefully they'll visit down here in FL soon! Man, was I blotto (my wife and I later tallied: 4 gin and tonics and 12 beers---good Lord) , so forgive me guys if I was rambling like a lunatic. My wife and I were lucky enough to secure a hotel room a block away from the venue, so I indulged much, much more than I typically do, but I still have a perfect memory of the show. This one struck me as a little more subdued than the Atlanta show, but a highlight for me was meeting Dave Phillips' mother, who was right beside me and filming her son. My wife managed to help Mrs. Phillips get right up front for a better view. Seemed like a very sweet and proud woman the minute or so I spoke with her.
As far as the opening acts go, I enjoyed them all, but was particularly impressed with David Lovering and The Bennies. A lot of people seem to gripe about Lovering's act, but I had the chance to pay close attention to his act in Athens, and people seemed to love it. Think of a pyromaniacal Mr. Wizard on LSD. Very funny stuff. Hope Lovering continues to tour with Black in the future, as RP has done. The Bennies were impressively tight; for some reason, they reminded me a bit of the Dead Milkmen---sorry, guys, hope this isn't an insult; it isn't meant to be. Being an opening band is a tough proposition, but people genuinely seemed to enjoy the Bennies. I heard positive comments all around me. I briefly met with Jeremy (this is the lead singer's name, right?) and Chuck and Sheri were kind enough to buy me one of the Bennies CDs (thanks again, guys!)

Thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed The Bennies :) You're actually not the only one to mention the Dead Milkmen. I don't remember who else made the comparison, but I think it was Frank Black himself or Steve Albini...not sure.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the Athens show and although I live in Atlanta, I missed that show Saturday due to a good friends wedding reception. Captain Maximus(Tom) and his wife Carol were too cool. My wife and I had alot of fun hangin with them at the show. Meeting David's mom was cool too....you should've seen the look on her face seeing her son up there playing. I took about 80 pics and have them on a cd..I'll add a link to the site so as not to bog this one down. I got one with David Phillips but I have to admit the highlight of the show was at the end..Frank was packing up and I got a pic with him..Man...it was so cool. I think I said something gay like.."Frank, you're immortal!" TO which he said "Ahhhh..shut up!" My wife snapped the shot and I was done..how much better can it get? Anyway, I should have the pics up in a day or so and will email the pics to all that gave me their address at the show. I would also like to add that the Bennies were great and and I did buy their two cd's...gave one to Tom and Carol..then somehow on the trip back to Atlanta we lost it. If anybody can tell me how to get in touch with them I'll buy two more. I found myself "Jonesing" to hear them on Saturday! Jeremy was cool and the other guys in the band we as well. Reid Paley and the magic show were OK, let's face it we are there to see Frank.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I was at the Athens show and WOW!!!! First time seeing FB & C and they are amazing. Took a friend with me who haden't heard of FB & C and he came away from the show amazed like I was. Now he wants all FB CD's! Played a lot from Black Letter Days and the songs sound awesome live. Highlights for me were "How You Went So Far" "Crackity Jones" "Thallasocracy" "Jane The Queen Of Love" "Velvety" and "six-sixty-six". Wish I could have met Frank after the show, I guess there is always next time...........
