Giant Sand: BOTTOM LINE MAN (off Chore Of Enchantment)
Swollen is the dark heart that seldom masters muster. Happy is the hunger that still allows the flight of fluster. Sorry is the soap star that cannot choose her next film... It's tragic when the magic is as skinny as film
That's the bottom line, man. She's the bottom line, man. 3 cheers for Madame Bottom Line.
Staring out the looking glass. Lure lends light the luster Even there on gray graffiti stone Stone kicked clean by unknown duster Never mind those hurry flurries Or the icing of the air Keep in touch with your feminine side In case she loves you there.
And that's the bottom line, man. She's the bottom line, man. 3 cheers for Madame Bottom Line.
When folks fall in love they are delivered to the unknown. Fools that never fall are in love with the safety zone. So you can end up all crippled up by those crazy seeds you've sown. Therein lies the crux of the sweet flux of such irresistible moan. That's the bottom line, man. She's the bottom line, man. 3 cheers for Madame Bottom Line.

Dire Straits\Tunnel Of Love
Getting crazy on the waltzers but it's the life that I choose Sing about the sixblade sing about the switchback and a torture tattoo And I been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam And I don't know where I'll be tonight but I'd always tell you where I am
In a screaming ring of faces I seen her standing in the light She had a ticket for the races just like me she was a victim of the night I put a hand upon the lever said let it rock and let it roll I had the one arm bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul
And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above And I'm just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love
It's just the danger when you're riding at your own risk She said you are the perfect stranger she said baby let's keep it like this It's just a cake walk twisting baby step right up and say Hey mister give me two give me two cos any two can play And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above And I'm just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love
Well it's been money for muscle another whirligig Money for muscle and another girl I dig Another hustle just to make it big And rockaway rockaway
And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did Like the spanish city to me when we were kids Oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did Like the spanish city to me when we were kids
She took off a silver locket she said remember me by this She put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss And in the roar of the dust and diesel I stood and watched her walk away I could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me stay
And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above And I'm just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love
And now I'm searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades Searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades In any shooting gallery where promises are made To rockaway rockaway from cullercoats and whitley bay out to rockaway
And girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did Like the spanish city to me when we were kids Girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did Like the spanish city to me when we were kids

My two favorite Aimee Mann lyrics -
The Moth
The moth don't care when he sees the flame he might get burned but he's in the game and once he's in he can't go back, and beat his wings 'til he burns them black no the moth don't care when he sees the flame no the moth don't care when he sees the flame
the moth don't care if the flame is real cuz flame and moth got a sweetheart deal and nothing fuels a good flirtation like need and anger and desperation no the moth don't care if the flame is real no the moth don't care if the flame is real
So come on let's go ready or not cuz there's a flame I know hotter than hot and with a fuse that's so thoroughly shot away
the moth don't care if the flame burns low cuz moth believes in an afterglow and flames are never douzed completely all you really need is a love of heat no, the moth don't care if the flame burns low no, the moth don't care if the flame burns low
So come on let's go ready or not cuz there's a flame I know hotter than hot and with a fuse that's so thoroughly shot away
SAVE ME
You look like - a perfect fit For a girl in need of a tourniquet
But can you - save me Come on and - save me If you could - save me From the ranks of the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone
'Cause I can tell You know what it's like The long farewell Of the hunger strike
But can you save me Come on and save me If you could save me From the ranks of the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone
You struck me down a gradient Like Peter Pan or Superman
You will come to save me C'mon and save me If you could save me From the ranks of the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone 'Cept the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone But the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone
C'mon and save me Why don't you save me If you could save me From the ranks of the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone
Except the freaks Who suspect they could never love anyone Except the freaks who could never love anyone

Harry and Maggie - Swervedriver
I was born on a close street down a hill The trees that line the street Could sense the winter change They felt the chill They ducked and dived And so we knew that they were alive Until the year the silver rain came down The trees turned mauve And so did my hands Oh, and the sound . . . There was no sound and I'm freezing in the sun Nobody cares to hide the dopeheads and the suicides 'Cause everyone freezes in the sun I kicked around with Harry Who lived near Salisbury Plain He worked on the cathedral there every now and again He worked with stone, carved with stone Odd jobs on the telephone One sunny day he was sent to the Houses of Parliament chipping' away at the gargoyles Under the blistering sun He carved out "Maggie Sucks" on the backs of every one And so in five-hundred years There's gonna be some history here After it all subsides in the sun
And it's fallin' away
Another year, another loon A new pied piper calls the tune So blow it up, watch it explode Noah's ark on overload Wrestle with the results and throw 'em round the ring Everybody knows there ain't no rules in wrestling The referee's a dupe Who only old ladies and children believe I'm getting up now to leave I'll go back to that street someday The air's better there anyway Though the trees are still gonna freeze in the sun
And it's fallin' away And I don't wanna know I'm glad I don't know What's draggin' it under

here's a little song we all know with some excellent lyrics:
Sun she burns mean and big I think I''ll go to Cafe Noir Big screen turns me on I''m gonna be a western star How hard can it be?
I get my freon bingo Inside your cool soft sarong Rolling on the moquette Inside a cul-de-sac kampong How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be?
She''s so sentimental She''s got my pictures in her head The tool-man is in her dreams I was lifted when she said How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be?
Now he''s headed skyward Standing up on piles of plywood And all he thinks about is how he Looks like Heroes-period Bowie And his figure blocks the light And he takes away the night And he''s dancing to the new bolero
Yo soy un pistolero I''m not shakin'' in my boots I''m ruler of this moon, boy So if you move I shoots How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be? [x2]
How hard can it be ?
Dancing to the new bolero (x4)

I thought Dave might like this one... or maybe not, it reminds me more of a Texas Chainsaw kinda thing.
I’ll make a shoehorn out of your shin. I’ll make a lampshade of durable skin. And oh don’t you know that I am always feeling able, When I’m sitting home and I’m carving out your naval.
I’m just a sittin here carvin out your naval.
When will I realize that this skin I’m in, Hey it isn’t mine. And when will the kill be too much meat for me, To hide on….
Hey I could really use a couple of hands, To complete one hell of a plant stand. And oh don’t you know that I am caught here in the middle, Making rib cages into coffee tables.
I’m just makin them into coffee tables.
And when will I realize that this skin I’m in, Hey it isn’t mine. And when will the thrill be too much meat from me, To find anymore…

child of the wind.....bruce cockburn
i love the pounding of hooves i love engines that roar i love the wild music of waves on the shore and the spiral perfection of a hawk when it soars love my sweet woman down to the core
there's roads and there's roads and they call can't you hear it? roads of the earth and roads of the spirit the best roads of all are the ones that aren't certain one of those is where you'll find me till they drop the big curtain
hear the wind moan in the bright diamond sky these mountains are waiting brown - green and dry i'm too old for the term but i'll use it anyway i'll be a child of the wind till the end of my days
little round planet in a big universe sometimes it looks blessed sometimes it looks cursed depends on what you look at obviously but even more it depends on the way that you see
hear the wind moan in the bright diamond sky these mountains are waiting brown-green and dry i'm too old for the term but i'll use it anyway i'll be a child of the wind till the end of my days |

Here´s one by Nick Cave. He is so cool: They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
From the first day I saw I knew she was the one As she stared in my eyes and smiled For her lips were the colour of the roses That grew down the river, all bloody and wild
When he knocked on my door and entered the room My trembling subsided in his sure embrace He would be my first man, and with a careful hand He wiped at the tears that ran down my face
CHORUS They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
On the second day I brought her a flower She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow So sweet and scarlet and free?"
On the second day he came with a single red rose Said, "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?" I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed He said, "If I show you the roses will you follow?"
CHORUS They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
On the third day he took me to the river He showed me the roses and we kissed And the last thing I heard was a muttered word As he stood smiling above me with a rock in his fist
On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief As I kissed her goodbye, I said "All beauty must die" Lent down and planted a rose between her teeth
CHORUS They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day
And then one by eels: It's a motherfucker Being here without you Thinking 'bout the good times Thinking 'bout the bad And I won't ever be the same
It's a motherfucker Getting through a Sunday Talking to the walls Just me again But I won't ever be the same I won't ever be the same
It's a motherfucker How much I understand The feeling that you need someone To take you by the hand And you won't ever be the same You won't ever be the same |

can't believe i had forgotten this one! my favourite of all time..
the monologue at the beginning of 'dead flag blues' by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows the government is corrupt and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn
we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death
the sun has fallen down and the billboards are all leering and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles
it went like this:
the buildings tumbled in on themselves mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair
the skyline was beautiful on fire all twisted metal stretching upwards everything washed in a thin orange haze
i said: "kiss me, you're beautiful - these are truly the last days"
you grabbed my hand and we fell into it like a daydream or a fever
we woke up one morning and fell a little further down - for sure it's the valley of death
i open up my wallet and it's full of blood
(written in 1997)

Good Morning, Captain By Slint (McMahon, Pajo, Brashear, Walford) From the album Spiderland
"Let me in", the voice cried softly, from outside the wooden door. Scattered remnants of the ship could be seen in the distance, Blood stained the icy wall of the shore.
"I'm the only one left. The storm, took them all", He managed as he tried to stand. The tears ran down his face. "Please, it's cold."
When he woke, there was no trace of the ship. Only the dawn was left behind by the storm. He felt the creaking of the stairs beneath him. That rose, from the sea, to the door.
There was a sound at the window then. The captain started, his breath was still. Slowly, he turned.
From behind the edge of the windowsill, There appeared the delicate hand of a child. His face was flush and timid. He stared at the captain through frightened eyes.
The captain reached for something to hold on to, "Help me", he whispered, as he rose slowly to his feet. The boy's face went pale, He recognized the sound.
Silently, he pulled down the shade against the shadow. Lost in the doorstep of the empty house.
"I'm trying to find my way home."
"I'm sorry... ...and I miss you."
"I miss you. I've grown taller now. I want the police to be notified. I'll make it up to you, I swear, I'll make it up to you.
I miss you."

Sweet! How do you feel about Tweez? It was hard to choose which lyrics to put here. It's been too long since I listened to Slint. Now that we have all our music organized and I can find things again, I oughta go get it.
edit: Just saw your Brainiac lyrics -good stuff.
Here's some other lyrics I love from Tweez - I'm not sure if they translate as well without the music and inflection.:
Carol
Past where the river bends. Past where the silo stands. Past where they paint the houses. Past where they paint the houses.
Take away, something that you know. The reason, that you're always there. Use it, 'til you're through. But remember, when the time comes, You got to let go.
Past where the river bends. Past where the silo stands. Past where they paint the houses. Past where they paint the houses.

Damn, more beautiful Slint lyrics. Listened to this just now, and jebus but I forgot just how powerful and gorgeous this song is:
Washer by Slint (McMahon, Pajo, Brashear, Walford) From the album Spiderland
goodnight my love remember me as you fall to sleep fill your pockets with the dust and the memories that rises from the shoes on my feet
I won't be back here Though we may meet again
I know it's dark outside don't be afraid everytime I ever cried from fear was just a mistake that I made Wash yourself in your tears and build your church on the strength of your faith
Please Listen to me don't let go don't let this desperate moonlight leave me with your empty pillow promise me the sun will rise again
I too am tired now embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep my head is empty my toes are warm I am safe from harm
"Wir müssen wissen. Wir werden wissen."/"Our house has seven doors, all are green...except one, which is yellow." |

Not a fan of lyrics. The music is that which has importance, imo. But I do like these lyrics:
"Let Go" by Ben Foster
Too many paths to choose from; so many already gone. Too many chances to worry about what's done. I'm tired of playing it over inside my head as if I will forget. Too many thoughts in my head about where I've been and where I'll go. Too many fears in my mind I feel I must control I can open my eyes and just be glad I'm here. My worries disappear.
And I have made choices that come back to haunt me. They always will. I've seen nothing but emptiness in front of me for what seemed like years.
Just let go.
Too many thoughts in my head of where I've been and where I'll go. Too many fears in my mind I feel I must control. I can open my eyes and just be glad I'm here. My worries disappear .
Although I have done things of which I am not proud, I am not defined by anybody's accounts of a glimpse of my past, and my future's mine.
Just let go.
I know you can't find the words to describe what you feel. Please don't chase it down. You'll miss it while it's here. The reason you can't find words is because they don't exist. Please just sit here with me and experience the joy of life: a simple smile. Resist the urge to pin it down. Breathe deeply. Look inside yourself. The sun still shines in you as it always will. You already have everything you'll ever need now. Stand and walk. See things as new. You've just begun to change the world.
Just let go.

For No One (Lennon/McCartney)
Your day breaks, your mind aches You find that all the words of kindness linger on When she no longer needs you.
She wakes up, she makes up She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry She no longer needs you.
And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years!
You want her, you need her And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead You think she needs you.
And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years!
You stay home, she goes out She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone She doesn't need him
Your day breaks, your mind aches There will be time when all the things she said will fill your head You won't forget her.
And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years!

Yeah, Tweez is good, but I think Spiderland is a masterpiece. The 10" EP is marginal. What a shame they didn't last longer than they did. I think that Slint is one of those bands that not a lot of people know about, but a horde of bands seems to sound a lot like. OK Computer still strikes me as a bit like it's been influenced by Slint.

I have to second anyone who wants to include Nick Cave, its all good.
How about these: Elliot Smith - Waltz#2 First the mic then half a cigarette Singing Cathy's clown That's the man she's married to now That's the girl that he takes around town She appears composed, so she is, I suppose Who can really tell She shows no emotion at all Stares into space like a dead china doll I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow
The Smiths - Frankly Mr Shankly Frankly Mr Shankly, this position I've held It pays my way, but it corrodes my soul I want to leave, you will not miss me I want to go down in musical history
The Cure - Pictures Of You I've been looking so long at these pictures of you, That I almost believe that they're real, I've been looking so long at these pictures of you, That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel. Remembering you standing quiet in the rain As I ran to your heart to be near And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close, How I always hold close in your fear Remembering you running, soft through the night, you were bigger and brighter and whiter than snow And screamed at the make believe, screamed at the sky, And you finally found all your courage to let it all go.
Beach Boys - God Only Knows God only knows what I'd do without you.
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah I heard there was a secret chord, that David played and it pleased the Lord, but you don't really care for music do you? It goes like this, the first, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift, the baffled king composed Hallelujah. Baby I've been here before, I seen this room, I've walked this floor, I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch, but love is not a victory march, its a cold, and its a broken hallelujah...
In fact, any song by any of these artists. I'll pick out a Nick Drake song for next time I post here.
