I've been looking to get a new album, and have heard good things about both the Fall and Guided by Voices. I was thinking about getting either GBV's "Bee Thousand", or The Fall's "This Nation's Saving Grace." Am I making a mistake with either album? If so, what should I be getting? Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know about GVB, but that Fall album has been a fave of mine for almost half my life. I'm 37.

I think 'Mag Earwig!' might be a better one to start out with. (GBV)

'This Nation's Saving Grace' or 'Hex Enduction Hour' are great Fall albums to start with.

I dont think you can go far wrong with any GBV album...except the new one.

I like what I've heard of the new GBV record, kinda proggy in spots, but still poppy. I think Bee Thousand is the best starting point with GBV, even if it is a bit lo-fi.

Alcohol or pot? VHS or Beta? Man or Astro-man?

Don't start with Under the Bushes, Under the Stars
I did that and I took my a long time to appreciate GBV
and get their other records, I presume Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes is a good start.

When I went to the local record stores, there wasn't much of a selection. All they seemed to have of GBV was "Human Amusement at Hourly Rates: The Best of Guided by Voices". Would it be a mistake to start them off with a best of? If not, I'll probably order Bee Thousand tonight off of Amazon, if I can find a decent used one.

I'm not familiar with old GBV, but I own everything since Alien Lanes (funny isn't it, I'm a huge GBV/Bob Pollard-fan but I don't have their classic Bee Thousand yet, I know it's good, I heard songs at the concerts and all, but I still don't want to own it, it's like too beautiful) and the songs on the best of are a pretty good selection

They're both good, but my vote goes to The Fall.

I have some GBV MP3s, and I'm not particularly impressed by them. They're okay, but not great. I believe they're from Alien Lanes, but I could be wrong about that. I do like the song "Teenage FBI," but I don't know what album that's on.

Anyway, I guess I'm wondering whether GBV is worth checking out further.

Teenage FBI is on Do The Collapse
a very Hi-fi GBV record
there is also a demo version or original version of Teenage FBI
that's the one without the synths. It's on the box version of their Best of
