I just discovered this song. I heard a live cover performed by Eels, and then discovered it was written by a certain Sofia Hawkins. Could someone please explain me the lyrics? Thank you very much.

Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover

That old dog has chained you up alright
Give you everything you need
To live inside a twisted cage
Sleep beside an empty rage
I had a dream I was your hero

Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'll rock you till the daylight comes
Make sure you are smiling and warm
I am everything
Tonight I'll be your mother I will
And I'll do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed,

This monkey can't stand to see you black and blue
I give you something sweet each time you
Come inside my jungle book
What is it just too good
Don't say you'll stay
'Cause then you go away

Chorus

Shucks, for me there is no other
You're the only shoe that fits
I can't imagine I'll grow out of it
Damn I wish I was your lover

If I was your girl believe me
I'd turn on the Rolling Stones
We could groove along and feel much better
I could do it forever and ever
Give me an hour to kiss you
Walk through heaven's door, I'm sure
We don't need no doctor to feel much better
Let me in
Forever and ever and ever and ever...

I sat on the mountainside with peace of mind
And I lay by the ocean making love to her
with visions clear
Walked for days with no one near
And I return as chained and bound to you

Chorus

what have I become, my Swedish friend? / everyone one I know goes away in the end

I really think it's a wonderful song. But who is "that old dog". And I didn't understand shit about the end : who is speaking?

Fuck, I hate it when I don't understand something (which doesn't occur very often, actually)!

If it is Sofia, and she's a lesbian (my interpretation) than why "I return as chained and bound to you"?)

I remember that song. It was by Sophie B. Hawkins; I was about 10 or 12 when it came out. The album was called "Tongues and Tails."

Maybe since the Eels covered it they replaced the lyrics at the end to reflect E's gender. It would've been misleading for him to talk about how he was going to "lay beside the ocean making love to him."

As to the meaning of the song, I always just assumed it was about being in love with someone who was already involved with someone else, an ode to the longing and the futility of desiring someone that you can never have. (Hey, Adnan, another NIN lyric!)

Take me, break me, tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry

This song was in my head a few days ago..... I heard it years ago and really liked it and then was trying to remember it but couldn't until today. Nice one!

Funny, it was my girlfriend's favorite song when we met in 1993. I remember we spent nights listening to 'Tongues & Tails' and FB's orange album, which had just come out. Great time.

No, this is Sofia's version. Eels don't even sing the last part of the song. But he says "if I was your girlfriend, believe me..."

Desiring someone you can't have, ok, but it is just one part of the song. I still don't get it.

Actually I don't think I quite understand what you mean by "Sofia's" version. The singer's real name might've been "Sophia B. Hawkins" but she went by "Sophie B. Hawkins." The two names are not two different people.

As far as the meaning, I dunno.

"Tongues and tails" would be a very nice name for an album if translated to French.
