or actually, charles thompson
ok kids let me explain this for many years we, frank blacks fans around the globe are willing to hear our beloved Frank Black play his precious, my precious, our precious St. Francis Damn Disaster
the song is so good, he could do a whole album with eleven times this song crap, he could even do a double album, 22 times, with the two pale boys, pixies, catholics and the darkness and it would still be the best album of 2004 and 2005!
But Frank doesn't want to play it why, you ask? Because he says that he can't remember the lyrics
OK, I can see why, it's a long song But wait a minute he can't learn the lyrics to his own song, even it's THE jewel in his back catalogue? Why on earth can he remember Changing of the Guards? A Dylan song? He played it at the beeb, so how on earth could he remember those lines? All I can is: SIXTEEN YEARS! and then my mind goes blank
so frank explain people of fb.net explain
to make this a bit of a contest it's forbidden to use the word lyric sheet and any synonym of that

I personally don't see what the big deal is with this song. I mean it's a great song and all but it's kind LONG and it's just like the same thing 20 times. I'd rather him play San Antonio, TX live

I'm sure he can remember it if he sat down and did it. I've never memorized it myself, close, but if you look at the lyics, there are cues at the end of each stanza... i.e. the "miles to go" become less and less...
the lyrics of the song actually facilitate memorization. So he could do it, probably in a day or 2...
But at the same time it would be easy to get confused and mess them up and that wouldn't be very professional...
And learning the lyrics of song you have been singing along to for years and years, changing of the guards, I figure is a lot easier than remembering one you wrote only 2 years ago...
Anyway, to answer your question, I don't fuckin know... sorry |

It's such a beautiful song. The way it's written...what it's about, such a beautiful tragedy. This song really displays his ability at songwriting.

I believe that he does not perform "Pray for the Girls" and "COR" (the song) live for the same reason - too many lyrics. So far, he's only performed COR once! Accoustically! At McCabe's guitar shop! But someone asked him a question about it right here: http://www.evo.org/html/interview/BlackFrank.aol.chat.html
JeffSDen: Is the song 'Cult of Ray' in the set list for this tour--you didn't play it when I saw you
Frank Black: No. we might start playing cult of ray on the next leg of the tour.

Yes, and especially the sound is so great. Once we were talking about craftsmanship to describe some of his songs, and this song is really the epitomy of craftsmanship, the structure is rather simple, unlike many FB songs, it is quite repetitive, and yet it gets deeper into you each time the chorus is repeated...
Oh, and I think that with Sir Rockabye, this is the song where Frank sings the best.
He says "c'est la vie" and takes another dive. |

Then again, he might not be so fond of some songs as others.

This is a really special song. Funny, it does not fit in with many of his other songs. I would imagine he does not play it because it has a unique status. My bet is that he plays it at some point in his career. |

I can somewhat relate to Frank's position. There are a lot of words. I know that with my band, every time we want to add a song to our live show we have to struggle with relearning the words, because frankly (no pun intended) lyrics aren't important to us. My band has written roughly as many songs as Frank has released. Some of the lyrics just won't stick. I can understand if it's the same for him. In addition, it's such a beautifully orchestrated song, I can imagine FB&TC's being intimidated to try to get the same sound live without all the additional musicians. I know they could do it, but would they want to? I worked a couple shows for the guys just before they recorded Dog (Frank, or as I wound up calling him "Chuck" referred to me as his guinea pig for the new material). They played every song that would be on the album except for St. Francis. I went to see them just after the album came out as well. My mom came along too, for she had beheld the power that was The St. Francis Dam Disaster. The first time she heard it it made her cry. She wanted to see that song played live. After a three and a half hour set, it remained unplayed. But I won't complain. All his songs are divine and I'd consider myself blessed to hear the same song played over and over live.

Hmm i dont think itd be cause of forgetting lyrics or getting lyrics muddled up. Possibly.. I only have 1 bootleg of FB and the Catholics and its the 2000-04-03 one in Portland. In Calistan i noticed the lyrics seemed to be jumbled up a bit i think. So maybe its different since st francis is written in a particular order (different miles to go, etc), but im not sure. Maybe he doesnt like the song much? Personally i love it though. |

I would love to hear it live. Frank is one of the few bands that sounds better live. After a frank show, i listen to his music on the way home, but it just doesn't do him justice after hearing his voice live. how many bands can you say that for?
St. Francis is one of the most amazing songs iv'e ever heard.
