I've just discovered this band from Portland, I've read somme stuff about them in a french comics magazine, downloaded some and finally bought their latest CD. Are they popular, like Cracker can be for example, because i've never heard of them before.

I've heard the name before, but that's about it. Don't know how popular they are.

I love the Decemberists...where did you get "Cracker" from?
To those wondering, they're basically the spawn of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Vaselines. |

Cracker? Weird... I've listened to their latest one a few times, and I can't seem to get into it. I shall keep trying. They're as popular as a well reviewed indie act can be without having a song in a commercial or film soundtrack. |

They definitely sound like Neutral Milk Hotel. Pitchfork loves them. I don't really care for that sound.
One of their songs stealthily leads me into thinking that they're gonna bust out into a Neil Diamond chorus at any moment. Hands. Touching hands. What a letdown. |

the decemberists rock!
i'm glad i live in portland at a this time, while they are still normal people, and i'm able to rub elbows with them in public.
they put on great shows. great lyrics, excellent tunes, fun on-stage antics (but not corny). |

Well, if you're talking about Countrysides, it IS a cover album, not original Cracker material. I still like it, though.

i've been on a huge Decemberists kick lately. i got their 3 cds last month, and recently divided em up into 2 cdr's.. a "rocking" one for the car, and a "mellow" one for beddy-bye time.
Anyone wanting to check them out: 4 mp3s can be found here... http://hushrecords.com/mp3enhancedframeset.html
and here's one more.. http://www.killrockstars.com/bands/decemberists/audio/TheSoldieringLife.mp3
and yeah, Owen, I know exactly what you mean about that one song that sounds kinda like a Neil Diamond tease! i think it's "California One" They did a Bjork cover of "Human Behavior".. anybody heard that? it's on some comp, i think. |

Actually, it's that Soldiering Life song that I thought sounded like "Sweet Caroline".
The part where he goes: "But I . . . I never felt so much life . . . ." They're actually growing on me. |

Thanks Switchy! When I get back to my computer tomorrow afternoon I'll definately check those out. I just saw their name listed under "Thos who bought the mountain goats also bought:" on amazon so now I'm very intrigued.
