Today could be the day Leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) was born 116 years ago.
Some say it was 115 years ago.
Some say tomorrow it will be 115 years ago.
Anyway: Happy birthday!

For those who do not know the Man:

Leadbelly was a blues/folksinger in who wrote some of the most famous songs ever known:

-House of the rising sun
-Black betty
-Where did you sleep last night?
-CC Rider
-Boll weevil
-Keep your hands off her (not that famous, but it's my favourite)

Yeah, what a great musician. Haven't listened to him in a good long while. What other blues/folk songers do you dig, chicken?

Only related in a roundabout way, I had a friend in college who had a cat with a perpetually largish stomach whom he named Leadbelly (not sure what was wrong with her, but she did eventually get very pregnant). His dog was named Kerouac, whose wandering ways did later lead to him getting hit by a truck and losing a leg. That was one great dog. Now that I think about it, I'm starting to think you gotta be careful when you name your critter pals.

Got to admit you're right...
But still, he is quite a good songwriter, let's say the Frank Black of his time, or is that too much credit...?

As a fan of Nirvana I discovered the music of Leadbelly.
As a fan of The White Stripes I discovered the music of Leadbelly again. Never heard the Boll Weevil song, which is really great, The White Stripes use it often as a closing of the show.
Mr. Jack White also got me into Blind Willie McTell and Robert Johnson.
Great to hear these old old songs from 60/70 years ago.
Once you get into it, you really discover some awesome melodies!

Well, as it's too late to congratulate Leadbelly with his birthday, can congratulate me, with my first 50 posts!
Finally made it to the Cult of Ray!
