There is always a word or two that I have to look up the meaning. I have had to find the definitions for Kampong (DITS), Narghile (BLD) and what a Cafe Noir might be. There are always new things to learn when I listen to a new FB&C's album.

I think "Noir" means black in French. maybe? So.. i dunno how they arrange adjectives/nouns in French but it could mean Cafe Black or Black Cafe. Anyone agree or disagree?

I just want to find out if it has specific meaning. I know that he mentions the word black on all his albums. I read a Paul Bowles novel which mentioned a Cafe Noir that is a safe haven for people to go and have a cup of tea and smoke their kif without any police harrassment.

Noir is a type of Western Film. He wants to be a Western Star. I really love that line Hero's period Bowie but I don't get it.

Film Noir is actually a term by French film critics for a specific kind of American film. These were generally dark thrillers and detective stories, generally not westerns, during the Classical Hollywood Cinema era. As a side note, these films were also the only ones allowed to have an unhappy ending during this era, although sometimes they would re-edit the film to give a forced happy ending that usually seems out of place. If you've ever seen The Third Man (d. Orson Welles), that is a typical example of film Noir.

I don't remember the context noir is used in the song, but if its a film reference that's should explain.

Punjar thanks for the correction. I like the extra info. The lines go Western Star - sun she burns mean and big i think i`ll go to Cafe Noir big screen turns me on i`m gonna be a western star how hard can it be ? / i get my freon bingo inside your cool soft sarong rolling on the moquette inside a cul-de-sac kampong how hard can it be ? / how hard can it be when you`re ba a western star ? shining and free don`t you know that a start burns best ? how hard can it be ? i said now how hard can it be ? / she`s so sentimental she`s got my picture in her head the tool-man is in her dreams i was lifted when she said how hard can it be ? / and now he`s headed skyward standing up on piles of plywood and all he thinks about is how he looks like Heroes-period Bowie and his figure blocks the light and he takes away the night and he`s dancing to the new bolero / yo soy un pistolero i`m not shakin` in my boots i`m ruler of this moon boy so if you move i shoots how hard can it be ?

I still think it has to do with Western Movies Maybe Frank Will tell us.

Cafe Noir is black coffee or Black Cafe in French. Cafe Noir -or Nero help me out UK people- is also a starbucksesque coffee joint which can be found serving over-price coffee throughout the United Kingdom. As for Kampong I think it might be a place or, the dress of a spacific place, most likely Thailand due to it's spelling and reference to the Sarong. The term "Yo soy un" means "I am a" in spanish. Interesting there are three different language references in the song.

Sticking to Western Star "and all he thinks about is how he looks like Heroes-period Bowie" which is a reference to Bowie's appearence around the time he wrote/performed Heroes. Getting a picture of this might help with some of the immagery...maybe about a western, but, there is a definate interstellar travel mood to the song as well (Just a thought is Major Tom on the same album as Heroes?). "Now he's heading skyward standing up on piles of plywood", then the reference to the moon and references during the Chorus point toward space.

Guess it is a Space Western Kind of song.

Was out driving today and I saw a Dump Truck and the model/brand was Western Star. Probably unrelated but interesting nonetheless.

I think the song is about Carl's Jr.

It's also about how he wants to be the Wyatt Earp of the moon.

Narghile is a device used by people in Arabia and other places around for smoking.

well, i'll try to explain how it works. it's gonna be hard for a portuguese speaker, so please be patient.
you put tobacco on a place that has boling water underneath [is "underneath" right? damn...]. well, that water doesn't get in direct contact with the tobacco, but the vapour does, and this vapour goes through some kind of hose, and that's how you smoke in saudi arabia. some houses have very big narghiles with hoses so long that you can walk around the place smoking it.

i'll try to find a picture of it and then i'll post it for everybody.

quote:

frank_black_francis e-mailed me with the following crap:

..."i hope that someone retires, they pull another menudo" thats how it goes......and by the way......i pointed out what words and phrases sparked my interest, not what i dont get....black compares the ramones to menudo in that song.....a point of interest, dont you think? if you call someone an idiot in the future....please make sure you have "a clue" first

i didn't call you an idiot, i said you had to be stoned to list menudo in your original message. of cousre i, and everyone else, knows where he mentions it. it's pretty obvious he meant that he hopes they replace anyone who leaves and keep going, duhr. it's probably the most obvious lyric he's ever written.

but in any case, don't ever fucking e-mail me again, especially when you want to be a belligerant asshole. reply here or not at all.

duhhr!! SURE HOEP I HEAVE A CLUE!!! KE E KE KEKEEE!!!! ^_^ ^_^
