floop, I'm looking at you. I suppose NYU is like, the top film school in the country...it also costs like $30K+ a year or something, and probably hard as hell to get into. Any other good film schools around the country where a shmuck like me, who's interested in writing, could get his feet wet?

Don't go to Emerson...I tried there, the first day the guy was like "none of you will ever make it...but my son did", screw that. |

reprinted with my permission:
jim,
last time i tried to give your ass my opinion you didn't want to hear what i had to say :)
i'm sure there are plenty of schools near you and around the country that have great writing programs to "get your feet wet".. like a State school or whatever. NYU, USC, COLUMBIA are all great schools, but you shouldn't spend that much money - especiallly on a writing program. when you get out of school and become a waiter, the last thing you need is to have 100,000 dollars debt hanging over your head.
if you're trying to be a screenwriter, going to "film school" isn't necessarily the recommended route - though it is a good idea to have a grasp on the entire filmmaking process.
you're young. you should just worry about getting a well-rounded education..
like i said last time, when it comes time to really look for work in the film industry, screenwriting included, you should be in LA. you're chances of meeting people and getting any kind of work are probably cut down by like 95% not being here. and if you go to school here and can get some kind of internship somewhere, all the better. internships are a great way to make contacts etc.. Cal State Long Beach and UCLA are affordable, good schools.. and there are those Screenwriting-devoted programs like New York Film Academy which i've heard good things about.
"getting your feet wet" and doing some writing: you can do that anywhere, and should NOT spend a lot of money.
actually pursuing Screenwriting, specifically, as a career/dream etc: you should be in LA. if not while in school, you need to move here directly afterwards.
i'm not an expert and i'm not in the writing field, but i can tell you what i know.. don't be afraid to ask me anything. i'm happy to tell you what i know..

I have a friend that is currently getting pretty far in the process of pitching an idea for an hour long network TV show. The interesting thing (at least too me) is that he has no training or experience in screenwriting. What he does have is a good education (including a law degree), connections (through his brother who works at a talent agency) to big names that we would all recognize, and he lives in LA. |
