Just watched Ricky Gervais's Animals dvd:
I wasn't sure what to expect as this, apparently, was his very first attempt at a 'stand up' routine. Certainly not an obvious next step after The Office.
Anyway, I laughed all the way through the routine. Some of it sails pretty close to the wind but he held it together very nicely. The 15 minute skit on the Book of Genesis is highly amusing (not sure if a devout Christian would find it quite so funny though!)
Anyone else seen this?
Any other must see stand up comic dvd's? Which is Eddie Izzard's best??

I love The Office, so I look forward to seeing this.
Other can't miss stand-up? I highly highly recommend Eddie Izzard - he is the only comedian that has had me on the floor rolling around in pained, tear-inducing, hysterical laughter. Look for the French skit - about the monkey and the chair and the tree, etc. - this harkens back to the levels of hilarity and absurdity of Monty Python, and then some. I think the routine I saw was "Glorious" on HBO, a few years ago....his website has some video clip downloads, I haven't watched em yet though:

"You never see positive drugs stories on the news, do ya. Isn't that weird cos most of the experiences I've had on drugs, were rrreal fucking positive.
But you know what I mean. Always that same LSD story, you've all seen it.

He's an idiot. If he thought he could fly, why didn't he take off from the ground first? Check it out.

That made my stomach hurt as the intense laughter pulled my weak stomach muscles. |

Yep. All his stuff is incredible. I especially love his "child worship" routine. He always reminded me of a George Carlin for the modern age. Mainly because he was disgustingly funny, and truly satirical with a huge heart behind it all.

It's one of the funniest things I've ever heard; The 'Doritos' thing, and his description of Leno commiting suicide because he's lost all his artistic integrity...blowing his head off, and the shape of the NBC peacock spraying onto the wall in his blood!

Hmmmm, not familiar with him...Denis Leary is another great stand-up, although I guess he did rip off Hicks a bit...although he claims-since they new each other-that they would joke about the similarity of their routines(i.e smoking, drugs, kids playing records backwards). "Keith Richards intimating that kids should not do drugs? Keith, we can't do any drugs, because you've already done them all! If we want to get high, we'll have to wait until you die and smoke your ashes!" |

I second that motion, Andy 'Little Black Francis' Pleva. I also love Steven Wright: hilarious deadpan one-liners about everyday stuff like lint, no politics or current events (not that I dislike jokes about politics and current evets [Lewis Black does a great job], but I really appreciate what Wright is able to do...it's very creative) |

I've only ever seen the dead rock stars bit of Bill Hicks, and I really need to hear some more, cos that was genius. Anyway, I'd recommend Bill Bailey and Ross Noble. These men are works of insane, rambling genius. I'd watch Never Mind The Buzzcocks if it was just Bill Bailey, the man is incredibly funny.

Can't figure why I didn't mention Lenny Bruce or Andy Kaufman. But I guess they do go without saying.
