I was at sam goody and since I was wasting money anyway, I bought a random throwing muses album, having never heard them before. It turned out to be the one from last year. I was just wondering what you guys think of them. I know they were all tourtacular with the pixies and stuff, thats mainly why I grabbed it. I myself think it's pretty good, nothing amazing but a solid album and I'd be interested in hearing more. |

I got one of their albums for like $2.00 at a record store that was going out of business a while back, but I still haven't gotten a chance to listen to it, only the first couple of songs. I'm trying not to sound sexist or anything, which I'm not, but I just can't get into female singers at all for some reason.

Yeah same here, don't know why either. Might just be their voice is higher, who knows. Any women have this problem with male or female singers? |

I loved the Throwing Muses and Kristin Hirsch's solo work for a long time. It's been a while since I've listened, as I haven't gotten around to updating that particular section of my music library from tape to CD - that's going to be a slow and long haul. "Hunk Papa", "Red Heaven" and "University" are my favorites. It may not be just a feminine/masculine thing - it might be regional as well - they strike me as a southern atmosphere - if you don't know that barefoot on the front porch with a sweating glass of iced tea, train whistle dopplering through the thick air in the distance, muggy hot molasses day with a window fan and the air buzzing with bug-speech and when you breathe it smells sweet and your chest gets heavy, then it might not speak to you.....then again, it's late and I've been working in the studio too long, I might be crazy....
I would have to be in a certain mood to enjoy them now. There are very few female singers that I can stomach, and even fewer female solo artists/bands. I'm not sure why that is. As far as male bands/singers, there are only a few of those that I really enjoy, but that I would never listen to on my own, like Mr. Bungle, et al, or Primus or Butthole Surfers - something about the headspace/psychology that is particularly male, and try as I might, I can't completely click. Then again, I love punk, so who knows?

I love TM, you really should try House Tornado or Limbo (to completely different albums, but they work for me)

I'm a bit of a lapsed TM fan. Maybe I should try listening to their music again.
I've got the first album on vinyl. It was a stunning debut. Also got the Chains Changed 12" which was released in 87 I think.
Methinks I should get myself a new turntable.

Next to The Pixies/Catholics, Throwing Muses are my absolute favorite band. My album recommendations for first time listeners are "The Real Ramona" and "University". You can find reviews I wrote of all their albums and EPs here. |

Back in 1994 when I started buying their albums I was at a tiny record store in Springfield, Mass. in the black part of town. the guy asked me what I was looking for and I said the Pixies and Throwing Muses. "Oh I think we have one thing by the Throwing Muses back here". I was thinking it was gonna be Hunkpapa or the Real Ramona which I already had but I went with him to look anyway. For five bucks I got the self-titled cassette. The tape itself had a label glued to it with the logo and the songs listed and the inside sleeve was cool and in great condition. I've never seen it anywhere else (except an import cd for $25 in providence) and I still can't believe I found it there of all places. One of the 4ad sites says that there's a best-of and b-sides coming out this year. That should be good. |

Definitely buy University. You will not be disappointed. If you thought the new one was decent, you'll love University.

Does anyone else hear the blatant similarities between "Two Steps" off Ramona and "Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)"? |

Actually, the chord progression to Two Step is the exact same as Debaser: F Bb G Bb. The similarity to Wave of Mutilation is mostly in tempo and mood, I'd say.
That's good to hear about the b-sides, if true. Anyone else excited about Kristin's new band 50 Foot Wave? I wonder if any LA-ers (Floop) have been to or is going to one of their residency gigs there this month. |

Yeah, your Debaser (UK Surf) line (I just read through those) was very accurate. Still, it couldn't've been accidental. It was either a deliberate homage or a deliberate style-bite on the UK Surf sound (even the rhythm of the lead is very similar). |

Throwing Muses are fantastic - think i prefer Kristin's solo work a wee bit more though... imho Hips + Makers is one of the records of the 90's. got into TM before the Pixies actually.
now, the pixies touring with 50 foot wave opening would be awesome..... an fantastic way to recreate the pixies first real touring experience.......

The only album I own is The Real Ramona, and I enjoy it, although it's nothing that blows me away. Actually, I also have a burnt copy of University that I haven't listened to much. I don't count burnt copies as owning, since I didn't buy them... I have access to those songs, but I don't own the album. The two songs on Real Ramona that I really like are Graffiti and Honey Chain.

I only have "The Real Ramona" and "University" and I think I prefer "The Real Ramona". Although I have to say "Snakeface" is a great sex song.

It´s gonna be a live band, touring band or so. Bernard George and Kristin from Throwing Muses and some guy named Rob on drums. I heard some live clips and it was very loud. I´m excited to hear their EP, is supposed to be released in march

50 Foot Wave is Kristin Hersh, Bernard Georges (both from the last Muses lineup - duh), and a drummer named Rob Ahlers. Their sound is supposed to be much heavier/more punk oriented than even the last Muses record! Their plans include releasing an EP every 6-9 months and playing an average of 60 shows per year. Exciting stuff, eh?
From Throwing Music Online: "50 Foot Wave will be in residence at the Silver Lake Lounge in L.A. every Tuesday night in January (the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th) We'll try to have good and interesting openers and the band should hit the stage by 10pm each night for roughly an hour long set.
"Tickets will be available at Virtuous.com and should cost no more than $10 (as promised)...we may even have a little merch by then...We'd love to see ALL of you there...but will settle for all of you in the L.A. area." |
