What do they have in common?
Answer this correctly, and this thread may go somewhere slightly interesting.

Ian Astbury thinks he's the reincarnation of Jim Morrison.

You are correct my friend! End of topic, I guess. Well? What do you think of what he's done and what he's doing?

I hear the Doors thing was ok, but a bit surreal. Read a review that indicated that he had taken it all a bit too seriously but actually was quite impressive. I can't beleive that he could match Jim Morrison's baritone though.

My knowledge of the Cult ends with the Electric album. Much much better than The Darkness but hardly a iconic moment in the history of music.

Quite like the quirky and badly produced Southern Death Cult album. Dreamtime is also ok.

Tis nutty. Reforming the doors is like a Nirvana reunion show, or reforming the Jimi Hendrix Experience or something.

I was a big Ian fan for years. Then one day I realized from hearing him speak the guy seems like he's internally suffering because he hadn't made a larger impact then he had hoped. So now he'll just become someone that did, to compensate.
Also had heard he was a drag queen. I heard this from a girl I had dated for a short time that knew nothing about the cult except that an old boyfriend of hers had gotten the position as their drummer but didn't end up taking it because Ian kept hitting on him, and that he dressed in drag. Anyone ever hear this?

Okay, Carolynanna, that post, coupled with your hilarious PJ remark, gives you coolest person of my day over here. I don't get out much so you really didn't have much competetion but take it for what it is. I'll tell you what. I'll go out and interact with some humans to increase the value of that statement.
The self titled Cult album is one of my favorites. I have the box set with some more stuff like that and I have made a pretty great album out of that mid ninties material. People are usually shocked to here the stuff because they're used to sonic temple.
I'm pretty sure The Doors of the 21st century are still playing and he's toned the "reincarnation of Jim" stuff down. I've read great reviews and that they are working on an album of new material. I think a DVD is in the works too.
Nothing on the drag queen statement? Good! Lets drop it. That girl was nuts anyway.

The Doors are great...now, I can't believe they fucking reformed. The Doors/Nirvana comparison is dead-on. Granted, the whole band made up the Doors, they were a complete package, but when you say The Doors, who do you think of? Morrison...he made the Doors like Cobain made Nirvana. I can't believe they're touring, let alone recording a new fucking album.

I don't know for sure if anyone's "matched" it (that's a pretty strong word), but I think Ian A. is probably the best choice.

The funny thing to me is, did you ever notice, Jim Morrison's voice is one of the most frequently attempted to copy in rock. Am I wrong? Billy Idol, Ian Astbury, Eddie Vedder, the loser from Stoned Temple Pirates, the doofus from Creed. No doubt the list goes on and on.

Huh? Who you talkin bout? Come on, let me in on the joke.

Actually, I realize just now I forgot one, probably my favorite. Glen Danzig formerly of the once-great Misfits. If something should ever happen to Ian he could no doubt take over the duties of channeling Jim Morrison in a heartbeat. I doubt he would though.

canadian band? Ah... hm. They are either not popular here, or they really suck, or both? I'm guessing this because the only band that comes to mind is so bad I refuse to name them. I don't remember their singer being particularly morrisonawannabe ish though so I'm not sure.

Danzig is a total Morrison-wannabe. Just listen to "Hollywood Babylon." He's not big though, he's very short.

Thats ridiculous.

No way you could recreate The Doors. Its the same as the Who type thing.

WHy cant the rest of the band do a NEW project - not called the doors...cant they come up with anything?
Or is it just easier to get world acclaim and recognistion by using a name made by someone else.

I think you should order the limited edition (1,000 copies) live cd of

The Doors Of The 21st Century

like I just did. It's only forty dollars while supplies last!
https://www.disclive.com/artist.php?artistid=6
And they did come up with a different name. Didn't you catch that 21'st century stuff? See? A completely new band.

I think you've just answered your own question matey. The original drummer from the Doors, John Densmore, was against the reunion from the start and sued them, which is why they had to add "of the 21st Century" to their name.

I guess reunions are always tricky at best. The two that I've witnessed recently (Mission of Burma, Wire) were great. I really really hope the Pixies get together and that I get to see them.

I guess I personally don't fault anyone for wanting to make some money. It's kind of weird reuniting your band when your band doesn't exist anymore (i.e. the singer's dead), especially when the drummer absolutely refuses. The review I read of their concert was positive, only criticizing their song selection. Anyway...

They're not popular and they suck. Watch a video called the river and you'll see what I mean.
I thought Danzig might be too muscled.

Surely they've played the UK? They've been releasing new recordings (back to their original sound/spirit) and they've toured the US at least three times since 2000, if I'm not mistaken.

Okay. Update. I love it, but probably because I love The Cult.
This girl I went to dinner with tonight thought it was the Doors when she walked into my place. We listened to it all night and she liked it. It's trippy to hear for sure, but it's good.

Note to self: get ass itchin' ointment...fer ass...that's.. uh?...itchin'!

As a kid I saw Ian Astbury twice in Southern Death Cult and he was an absolutely electrifying performer. I then saw him with The Cult a couple of years ago at the Reading Festival, and he was bitter and twisted - "...we've been playing rock for years and you wouldn't listen....years in the wilderness..we're the only British band on the bill today" etc etc. He ended one rant with "...and when the FUCK did Clarks shoes become fashionable?!?!"

I'd have to agree with that. They need to duct tape his pie hole between tunes. He sounds like a crazy man. I've noticed that change in him as well.
