No offense taken, I was just trying to make a point that seeing FB&TC's is so much more than just hearing good music. They put on a f'in great show, it's all so much to take in. But after this last tour, I agree, I had put way too much pressure on the mood of Frank and the guys. You know what, I learned a valuable lesson, and now when I see them (if I ever do again), I won't care as much, and I'm just going to go and enjoy the music.

Sorry, I'm just in a bitchy mood.

Well, I agree with Atheist4Catholics and Broken Face.
I don't know why Frank Black is so grumpy with his fans. I thought it was because of all the pseudo-fans calling for a Pixies reunion. But in fact Frank seems to have always been distant from his audience.
When I met him, he seemed quite annoyed, so I just spoke to him for asking a photo. (At least, there is one out of the two where he smiles) Reid Paley came for the pictures and made a crazy head on them, very cool and funny guy!
My best memory of meeting a punk rock "star" (legend!) was when I met Bob Mould, you didn't even have the time to think about what you're going to say that he's already asking you what did you think about the show, where do you come from, etc. He makes you feel very comfortable. You just have the impression to speak to a friend.
My meeting with Sonic Youth was cheerful as well.
Personally, I just feel like there are two Frank Black, one : funny, cheerful + modest and humble; the other one: distant, shy, with some dose of ego.
But, well, anyway, I just love his music so much! I hope he will never stop making music, and I hope HE F***IN' KNOWS HOW GRATEFUL WE ARE TO HIM!!! (even if he doesn't want to listen!)

You tour night after night Travel 600 miles by bus Play for towns where you get equipment stolen... This is his LIFE AND HIS JOB It can't be fun 100% of the time... Even Frank has got to have a BAD DAY AT WORK once in awhile. I saw him live twice... Once solo and once with the catholics... At the Catholics show he played for 2 hours... Fought with some idiots in the crowd but STILL he hung out afterwards and talked and hugged his fans. Lets not forget Frank is a human being. We all have our ups and downs. Frank Included

Goodbye - I'm blowing a kiss to you
So long - Wonderful being you
Good Night - We'll soon be sleeping on the fields of marigold

So FrankÕs a little moody? So what. If he wasnÕt then I doubt he would be half the artist that he is...Such a wide array of emotion and styles from song to sonÐÐthat has to come from somewhere.

Besides, who cares. ItÕs not Frank Black the person you love, not really (because you donÕt know even him). ItÕs the worlds he creates that you love and the way his songs make you feel and all that other gobbledy-gook. If you donÕt want to be disapointed by how Frank acts to total strangers then do what I doÐÐdonÕt go up to meet him.

If Frank IS ambivalent toward his fans then I think alot of these posts show why (and sometimes IÕm guilty of this too); we want too much out of him. Frank Black fans are not casual fans (see Creed, Matchbox Twenty, etc.), sometimes we are a little obsessive and nutzo and need to step back and give the guy some room to breathe. Can I get a witness?

Heh-heh. When I saw Frank at the Little Rock show on 12/4, I could see why Himself might be a little cranky sometimes. Frank was signing stuff and posing for pictures after the show, and some guy asked him to sign a guitar for him. Not only did Frank graciously sign it, he even drew a little alien head. The guy then asks, "Uh, could you do something a little more, um, calligraphic over here in this area?" Frank stares blankly at him for a moment then gives the guy back his Sharpie. You know, he's already given you more than your money's worth with the show, so why vex him with such idiocy?

Billy & Bart have hit the nail on the head..... everyone gets fucked off with their jobs on somedays.... after all thats what jobs are there for, getting money and becoming thoroughly fucked off. Everyone has the ability to show that they are fucked off after a hard day at work, and everyone has the ability to not want to show people that they are happy at a certain point in time. Frank is human and to think that he has to play the same songs day in and day out in front of drunken people who knock over his mic stands etc etc, then who can blame him for not wanting to just get the job done and then go home.

Ive seen Frank three times, and he has been pretty jovial at all times. Even in the London Astoria when a bottle was thrown at the stage, he just passed a comment telling people to stop doing it (with a grin on his face) and carried on. I have no complaints about his live sets, from being moody / rude / whatever, to being friendly / hyperactive / jokey.... if the music kicks arse then thats what counts in my opinion.

Agree with the direction this thread has gone in the last little while. Can't imagine Frank's job being that easy and not without stints which would make most our heads spin (refer to the story about Vermont...think the Big Galoof wrote it).

On the whole I think he, like everyone else, has good and bad days. I have been fourntunate to have caught him a couple of times and as a result have some pictures and cool keepsakes because of it. So what if he isn't enthusiastic all the time...who is?

I know it is winter, but, never trust a man who wears a fur coat.

Man, what's it gonna look like after Frank finishes his lengthy, hard-workin' tour and clicks on this webpage and sees a topic called "why so grumpy, Frank" Egad.

You have to keep in mind that you know him as Frank Black. You analyze his every lyric and every aspect of his personality and know the whole history of his life and career. But to him, you are just some guy/girl that came to his show. What seems to you like he's blowing you off could just be him not paying attention to someone he's never met and means nothing to him. That doesn't make him a snob or a bad guy. He does his best to talk to people and be friendly, but think about it. He does it just about every night, so there are bound to be some people that don't get to talk to him. Imagine if you just played a show, you're tired and all you want to do is go back to the hotel and sleep so you can wake up in time for your show the next day. Just empathize with him and maybe you'll see he's a busy guy with a lot on his mind, just doing his job, which is to entertain you. He does it quite well and has been for a very long time, in my humble opinion. Jeremy.

Very true Jeremy. How did you/the rest of the band enjoy the tour with Frank and the Catholics? Any particular highlights?

Imagine if every book in a library kept talking to you while you're trying to read...unless, of course you have one of those audio books, in which case...nevermind.

looking at fans as meaning nothing is a bad attitude. i disagree with your post, jeremy. i don't think that's frank's attitude at all. anyone who's read an interview knows he appreciates his fans, and is grateful and happy to be able to do what he does.

as has been said before (in this thread which should really have died out a long time ago), putting on a show, and hell getting ready for it is a lot of work, especially when you don't have a whole bunch of teamsters to do it for you.

people just need to cut frank some slack, that's all.

Hundreds of other bands and artists make the same commitment to touring and work just as hard, but still manage to act consistently friendly towards fans and also seem to enjoy themselves on stage. Frank is the only one I've seen who didn't seem to want to be there every time I saw him. Like I said before, I loved the shows, I just thought it odd that he would come off that way especially considering the often quirky abnd humorous nature of his music.

Hey, have you listened to that long interview w/Frank on the FTP site? I forget what it's called--it's the one where he spends forever talking about how to make the perfect Caesar salad. He does spend a little time explaining his ten-yard stare and why he tends to tune the audience out while performing. It's a good interview.

Well I never said he didn't appreciate his fans. Of course he does, why else would he continue to tour the way he does... But you can appreciate your fans and also not feel like stopping to talk to each and every one of them. I don't think he consciously doesn't talk to people, they just misinterpret it that way.

Hey Ten Percenter, all three of us had a great time touring with fb and c's... we didn't want it to end. Highlights? Hmmmmm, maybe on a sidewalk in athens when charles said to us, "alternative rock? i invented it". This really happened. I didn't know what to say, because I knew he was right but I couldn't tell if he was serious or not, so I just said "it's true".

Maybe it was overloaded, or exceeded bandwidth limits, but the original link works. If anyone has a streaming ripper, can you please rip this interview, and upload it onto the ftp? It would be a good archive.
