Radiohead, Pixies Confirmed For Coachella
As expected, organizers have officially confirmed that Radiohead and the Pixies will perform on the first day of the fifth Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, to be held May 1-2 in Indio, Calif. Pioneering German rock act Kraftwerk will also play on May 1. As first reported here, the lineup will also feature Air, Prefuse 73, the Thrills and Electric Six, plus the newly added Sahara Hotnights and the (International) Noise Conspiracy.
The Pixies will be playing their first show since abruptly disbanding in 1993. It is unknown if all four original members -- guitarists Frank Black and Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering -- will be present, or if the show will dovetail into a tour or new recording project.
As previously reported, a Pixies DVD is in the works, featuring eight videos and a full 1988 concert, as is a newly compiled "best of" to replace the out-of-print 1997 album "Death to the Pixies." Billboard.com can confirm that Black is also planning a spring release for new solo music on spinART, which has issued his last three studio albums.
Kraftwerk's appearance will come at the end of a three-month world tour that begins Feb. 6 in Helsinki. Last year, the group released "Tour de France Soundtracks," its first new album since 1986's "Electric Cafe."

Yeah, I figured the solo stuff was soon to be out the pipe...
Oh, and for the record, please post stuff about Frank in the news in "Frank Black making noise" even if it's Pixies news. Thanks for bringing this up.

This is my favorite part - "Billboard.com can confirm that Black is also planning a spring release for new solo music on spinART".
I wonder if "solo" really means with the Catholics? I'm guessing it does.

indeed..
a few things about Coachella if you're going to go:
- there is camping available nearby, which a lot of people do, but i wouldn't recommend it unless you don't want to sleep. which may be the case. but if you're going for 2 days, and would actually like to get some sleep at some point to enjoy the next day, i'd recommend getting a hotel room.
- get there early if possible. the line to get inside can be a nightmare if you get there late, as i did.. and when you're talking about being in the middle of the desert in May, sitting in direct sunlight for 2 hours can suck.
- unfortunately Coachella is a money trap. they won't let you bring in any water, even though it's an outdoor festival in the middle of the fucking desert. even if it's factory sealed. no drinking fountains either. the only water they have is 12oz waters for $4 (maybe this year they'll be $5).. nothing you can do about that, but i'd recommend bringing some cash.
- most importantly, Agua Caliente is just a short drive away on the 10. perfect for pre- and post- concert sin. bear in mind, they can't sell alcohol after 2am in California so if you're going to the casino afterwards (which i will be), you should bring some of your own in the car (as i will)..

A new solo album??!! I hope to god this is true as it will give me something to look forward to this spring since I'm guessing there will be no catholics tour.
What really pisses me off about this whole thing is even though I can't stand the thought of a reunion, I would still sell my soul to satan to get to see them and I won't be able to because it's in fucking CA

first time poster, long time lurker. it actually seems like it might be "happening" but really no one knows, I gather.
So here's my question: when are YOU going to buy your tickets? IE when is it "safe" to spend the hundreds (and maybe thousands) necessary to get you to coachella to see this? Think there will be official confirmation at the DIY convention? Anyone know when tickets go on sale?
Obviously this is speculation but I am just wondering what people's plans are and when to believe. |

the Coachella site isn't up yet, but once it is you can buy tickets from there. plus they'll have tons of recommendations for food and lodging etc.. www.coachella.com
i don't think it's ever sold out, but this year it probably will.
broken face - i'm guessing the only other way besides renting a car is taking a Greyhound Bus (not sure if they travel through Indio, but probably).. taking Greyhound is generally for masochists, but i suppose it wouldn't be that bad from LA to Indio.
i know that in other years they've had a discussion forum on the coachella site where people can try to hook up for carpooling and such. you might want to try that. |

Is anyone interested in having a FB.net meetup for this show? Like, staying in the same hotel and stuff? |

I really hope they do a tour at least even a small one. There's no shame in playing a festival like this where there is no "headliner" but I think it would be a bit of a waste to just play one gig.

I reckon the new FB solo might be a b-sides album as Frank seemed warm to the idea in the King Holds Court thread.

i posted this elsewhere, but may as well here, too. there are still $40 rooms available for may 1 & 2 in indio at motel6.com. that motel 6 is like less than a mile from the festival site, so you could either walk it, or i know a lot of people set up carpools there to drive to the gig. this is the "party central" place, so those rooms will go really quick now that the dates are firmed up. go ahead and book it, and if you wind up not going you can cancel up to the day before check-in with no penalties. other hotels in the area have already jacked their prices way up, so motel 6 is probably your best bet, unless you wanna camp at the site. BUT alcohol is not allowed in the campsite at all. and that sucks. as for getting there from l.a., yeah, once the coachella website goes live, check their messageboard for rides, there's always someone willing to help out... if not someone on this board.

You know what? Fuck Coachella, there's no way I'm going. $100+ to see the Pixies under the absolute worst conditions possible? If the Stooges couldn't get me there, then sorry Charles. I'll see them if and when they play someplace accessible, where I can actually see and hear them and have something approaching a meaningful experience. I've been going to Frank Black shows for 7 years and will be doing so as long as he keeps putting them on, and I haven't been going ONLY because the Pixies weren't an option. I'm letting this slide, and stressing about it no more.
I hope that Dave N.'s cryptic dismissal of this 'confirmation' turns out to bear some weight.

I lucked out and caught all the prehype posting for coachella last week on their message board, and waited to get my room until last night.. I also saw the motel6 rooms for the last week.. Thought I had a chance of getting into Indio this year.. All the other years been stuck out in cathedral city, well those rooms are gone, and others seem to be going just as quickly.. so get your room now if you dont want to pay $$.
All the years I have gone have been a great experience.. The pros definitely outway the cons.. Even when I heard a fan of "RAGE!" say that he beat up a hippie because he was a hippie..
Just hope they dont cross schedule two bands you want to see or you will be making a hike from one side of the field to the other..

Why does this still seem like a rumor to me? What the heck...
Someone email me when it's actually confirmed. i.e. - when the Pixies are all on stage playing together.

Yeah, screw crappy corporate festivals held in the scorching desert, Pixies or no. Hopefully the security won't be so tight that someone can't hook me up w/ a bootleg afterwards. |

You may want check out flying into Palm Springs. It probably costs more but may be cheaper than trying to get from LAX to Indio. |

$100 a ticket is that all?? Thats nothing, the festivals in the UK are usually much more expensive than that, I know for certain that Glastonbury is almost double that. I'm gonna work out my finances and see if I can possibly do a round trip, including everything for about $1200.... if so then I reckon LA is on the cards as my best mate back in the UK is up for it as well.
I'm just waiting for an official word from Frank and then I'll set the ball rolling.

I was thinking something more along the lines of, the Pixies are playing Coachella but it's really just the catholics calling themselves the Pixies -- wouldn't that be cool (to me at least)
