I know there is a movie as well as a band named No Smoking.
But what I'm talking about, is that the world is getting less tolerant to the smokers nowadays. It has already happened in th US, it is reaching Europe now. I am not a real smoker, but now and then, I enjoy smoking a cigarette when I go out in a café, for instance. And I'm afraid I won't be able to do it anymore (and certainly not in a Starbucks). Cars are polluting as well : should we ban cars ? |

my town officially banned smoking about 2 years ago...can't smoke in bars, restaurants...anywhere indoors basically except for your own home.
And the bitter arctic air is a detractor as well. I'm at work and would love a smoke right about now, but there's now way in hell i'm going outside!

Isn't smoking in public places banned in Ireland? and my home country, New Zealand is probably going to follow suit in the not to distant future. I personally think it is a good move. As a non-smoker, I hate, after leaving the pub, feeling as though i've smoked a packet and a half and stinking to high heaven.
I don't think it's the polluting factor of smoking thats the problem...most countries have/will ban it because of the healthrisks the workers face from working in the smoky environment......

There was a thread a while back about FB's brother Errol, who made a stand about allowing smoking in his bar. The discussion developed from there. The search function didn't like me so I can't link it. Red Ken is planning on banning public smoking in London. I don't smoke but I don't really approve of that.

Here's that link: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=3671&whichpage=1&SearchTerms=brother%2Cbar
It got into a pretty heated debate. Fun!
I quit smoking about 5 or 6 months ago, but I still feel the same way. There are gross double standards going on in this country, and it seems to be spreading. If cigarrettes are so darn-blasted bad for you (which they obviously are) then why don't they outlaw their manufacture? huh?

Then just don't go to a pub....or perhaps they should ne smoking and no-smoking pubs, but just because it bothers you doesn't mean you can outlaw it.

Economics, my dear. The Demand curve for cigarettes, alcohol, petrol etc. is almost flat, i.e. people will always want the same amount of cigarettes no matter the price. Therefore the government can get some horrendously large tax revenue out of them.
Thanks for the link as well, dear.

I try as often as possible to find a pub that either discourages smoking or out and out bans it, but there aren't many of those round are there.... and i think you'll find it doesn't just bother me....it bothers a considerable percentage of the non-smoking population.
i'm all for people having a cigarette if they want to, but i just don't think i should have to smoke it as well. if they made a cigarrete that produced sweet-smelling smoke that didn't make you gag then yippee, but until they do, i'm anti.
and cheesy is spot on about why the manufacture of cigarettes will never be banned...the governments just make far far too much money out of it.

one girl sat next to me in a club, she was smoking and all the smoke was going right in my face, making me cough... so i said, as nice as hell, do you mind not blowing your smoke into my face, and she said "if you don't like it don't come to clubs" LOL! It was my flaming club night and she had just parked her ass next to us on her own! i don't like people fighting outside pubs, but it happens, i'm not going to stop going because i might get caught up in it...
it's not really a case of it bothering people, more it's bad for a number of health reasons and makes you stink to high hell of it... maybe i really enjoy throwing stink bombs at people, so you get hit a few times by some, just because it bothers you doesn't mean you can outlaw it, i happen to enjoy it...

If there was really demand for non-smoking pubs, they would pop up of their own accord. There is no legislation here for non-smoking restaurants, yet many have in the last decade moved from 75% smoking to 25-0%. Why? That's what the people wanted. If people REALLY wanted non-smoking pubs, then the demand would have pubs converting. But, at least for now, they don't.
Myself, I deplore smoking, can't stand the smell, and hate sitting near them to boot. But if _I_ don't like it, I don't have to go to these establishments. Private establishments. Why should the government intervene in whether someone allows a perfectly legal think like smoking a cigarette in their own business? When there's true demand, it will happen of its own volition, and I'll be more than pleased. Of course, that's never good/fast enough. Saskatoon, the city in which I live (and future capital of Europe), is looking right now at a no-smoking bylaw with much of the controversy you see here. I see both sides quite clearly, but in the end I think the government needs to butt out of private business so to speak. Everyone has a choice of whether to be at a certain place or not, and if they don't want to, they don't have to. The business' loss.

she's not bad, but a bit dull. my best mate pulled her i think, but he avoided her since... i have a hot girlfriend already, who actually did smoke when i first met her, luckily no more though... can't stand it... which means you don't have a chance with me either Adnan...
dean, i'm not too sure, already a lot of pubs ban smoking by the bar, to protect their staff from it... if they banned it completely it would lose them money. it's not a case of people not going to these places because people smoke, more a case of people putting up with it... a lot of bars around here have smoking and none smoking areas now anyway. unfortunately it's a bit trickier with clubs... no one wants to lose money by banning the smokers from smoking... so we put up, for the time being.

I very rarely go to pubs because of the smoky environments.
If the pubs were non smoking then I would go more often.
It is all down to economics. If the number of smokers dwindles to a certain level then the pubs will have to react in order to maintain their level of business.
I am actually more irritated by restaurants which have so called smoking and non smoking sections. There is absoultely nothing worse than eating a meal and having cigarette smoke wafting across.
