There is one purpose to life and one only:
to bear witness to and understand as much as possible of the complexity of the world, its beauty, its mysteries, its riddles. The more you understand, the more you look, the greater is your enjoyment of life and your sense of peace. That's all there is to it. The rest is all fun and games. If an activity is not grounded in loving or learning, it does not add value.
You may ask why and to answer let's imagine answering the question for others.
For a cruel and stupid man/woman a sufficient answer is "It is the safest way to live life." For a great man/woman this would be the answer: "It is the most rewarding and illuminating way to live life." To the oppressed themselves, the answer is "It will alleviate your pain."
For a selfish and blind person, I would say "It will bring you the greatest peace in the end if you remember others, if you love, if you learn."

But what happens when what you learn conflicts with the idea of love as sanctified? What if you learn that the distinction between life and inanimate matter is an illusion? Better love thru chemistry? Is there anything more selfish than having children? |

ok so I generally agree with you carolynanna, and I think erebus's poindexter approach to emotions is partially valid as well (I know dude no empirical concept can be taken partially etc...stick with me for a second) but what I want to know is, based on either approach, what if you dig pain?

I'm not attacking here, but this sort of ethos is hubris, plain and simple. I think it's a product of a "gee-ain't-humanity-great" attitude but we have not yet evolved to that point. One day, though. Maybe.
