I just finished reading "Lolita" in English (I read it in French long ago, as well as lots of other books written by Nabokov).
The original version is 100 times superior, because I was finally aware of all the subtle language craftsmanship used by Nabokov.
I really consider it as one of the best novels in the modern litterature. And I refuse to see it as a diary of a paedophile. It is a genuine story of impossible love, like Romeo and Juliette.
I know many of you only know it because of the movie (which I did not see), but if you read Nabokov, please tell me what you think about it.

Once again, I am really sorry, I am French, so you have to speak really slowly if you want me to understand...

Dr. Seuss is like Jerry Lewis for 5-year-olds. [winky] |

Did you know Jerry Lewis had been given the French "legion d'honneur" (highest distinction), for his contribution to culture all around the world.
Sometimes, I understand people who invented the "freedom fries".

Dr. Seuss is a children's book genius---How teh Grinch Stole Christmas, and The Cat in the Hat (to name the two you're most likely to recognize due to recent films) are some of his works

I knew this chick in grad school that always carried around a copy of that book. She was probably 22ish but looked more like 17 or so. Anyway, now that I think about, she had a lot of the older students. You know -- those creepy, older guys that just never, ever leave school. I guess maybe that was their reason for staying. That and doing lines of chalk dust. Whatever keeps you off the streets or your mom's couch, guys. |

Nabokov is my favourite author in the world. Though I haven't read "Lolita," I did read "The Enchanter," which was basically an earlier attempt at the story. The ones I like best so far are "Despair" and "Bend Sinister." Just three days ago I also came across my copy of "Invitation to a Beheading," which it doesn't look like I finished. It was propped between the wall and the back of my bookshelf with an old bus pass as a bookmark. I was very excited to find that, because I thought I had just lost it or lent it to someone and forgotten about it.

for a 9th grade poetry project, we had to recite a famous poem in front of the class. I chose Fox in Socks. For that, I got a 0%

Nice sig, Carolyn - I think I'll listen to it now :)
I liked "Lolita", quite a bit, Adnan. I have not read it in the French, so I can't speak to the original vs. translations point. There is much that I am sure I missed in the many literary references. Someday I'll read it again - I have an annotated version now. So many books, so little time.
Did you know that Nabokov was also an expert lepidopterist? Intriguing person.

She was cute. Not beautiful. Not a hottie. Not even F.I.N.E. fine, but definitely cute in a pubescent sort of way.
Superficially, she looked a lot like the girl in that movie Ghost World -- which, by the way, has a little Lolita action with a creepy guy goin' on, too. |

There is even a butterfly named after him, "Nabokov's Blue", which he discovered.

Pretty.
Have you read any of his other work, Adnan, and if so, do you have any suggestions?

I haven't read it, but from what I've heard (and I've heard some good things about it), it's not a comedy. Wait - were you talking about the Nabokov book? |

it's not considered a "comedy" at all, no, but there is qutie a bit of dark humor in the book. which rarely gets mentioned.. |

People don't think he's a funny writer because he clouds his wit in some very unconventional situations, content that many people can't stand to read. I've actually had someone tell me I must be a pervert because I like Nabokov.
