This was posted to the Mike Watt mailing list, haven't seen it anywhere here yet. Hard to ignore the line about his "surprising plans for the coming year." Geez, I hope he's not retiring...hehe
Really though, not trying to stir y'all up, but it's definitely news.

From MTV...Frank Black, in the process of getting his old band the Pixies back together, is set to deliver the keynote address at the fourth annual DIY Convention: Do It Yourself In Film, Music & Books, taking place February 5-7 in Hollywood. Black will speak about his career, the state of the entertainment industry and his plans for 2004. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1484200/20040107/master_p.jhtml?headlines=true |

it would be nice to know which day Frank will be speaking.. i notice that each day is separate admission, and different prices.
[edit] so i'm guessing he's doing the Saturday one, which is $75 bucks. yikes.. it would be cool to see him speak, but that's kind of hefty.

i have an idea: how about everyone on the forum gives me $5 to represent FB.net, (to sponsor me if you will) and i'll report back with a nice thorough review (if not record the interview)..
even though the admission price is $75, and there are over a 1000 members on the forum, i think $5 per member is still fair when you consider time and expenses (driving to the East side etc...)..
i will accept Paypal. |

When I last bought Dead Kennedys records, their singer was Jello Biafra - is that Jeff Alusis's stage name or is Jeff someone different? Dead Kennedys are playing here soon, and I don't want to go and watch some imposter.
Note that the blurb trails Frank's plans for the coming year as "surprising" - the plot thickens. |

A retirement announcement would be a lame message for a conference about Doing It Yourself. |

Would'nt it be funny if he swapped bands with Kim Deal? So it was Kim Deal and the Catholics...that might make an interseting reality T.V show.

that's a good point. although, he's really just talking about his career, which, even if he was retiring, he'd still be a great speaker on the stubject of doing-it-yourself in the music industry.
it's just that all these recent changes make me a little suspicious.. moving to Portland, the divorce, possible talk about Pixies reunion.. i don't see him retiring, but it's always a possibility.. you never know. |

Yeah I don't see anything that hints at his retirement. It just says his surprising plans for the coming year. It sounds like something to do with the Pixies as much as I hate to say it and don't want it to happen

call me greedy, but I hope his plans have something to do with NEW material, be it solo, with the catholics, or with the pixies. I would take hearing new stuff over seeing the reunited pixies on stage any day...unless the reunited pixies are playing new material.

It probably has either something to do with the Pixies (quite likely though not so surprising anymore) OR perhaps with another solo project (which would likely run parallel to his Catholics stuff). I admit the solo stuff seems excessively unlikely, but hey, it's a DIY conference and I can't think of many surprising things that he could reveal to the world.
My money's on announcing a Pixies reunion officially.

a new solo project...that didnt even come to mind. Excellent theory Cult of Frank. The idea of a solo project running parallel to a Catholics project sounds like the best possible 2004 agenda. Didnt somebody say something about Frank releasing an album with the catholics, but that his next release will not be his newest material or something cryptic like that?

Yes, I don't remember where that was, but that remark in particular is exactly what I was thinking when the solo project came to mind.

I don't think it's retirement myself, that was just a joke. Honestly, I'm now pretty much convinced he'll announce a Pixies reunion at this convention, but there's probably more on his plate than that. In recent weeks I can remember people posting here about a possible "live record" type thing being on the Sonic Unyon website, and also a disc with reworked versions of Pixies songs as performed with Two Pale Boys. On top of that, someone suggested a tour with the Catholics would be running concurrently with the Pixies excursion. I didn't pay enough attention to figure out if these got shot down, but they really stuck in this memory.

btw, Barnsdall is an excellent place- a Frank Lloyd Wright- designed estate that was willed to the city and turned into a municipal art park. It has recently reopened, after a two-year renovation. A great place to see an event like this! |

I would think any reunion announcement would be a group announcement. I know the break up supposedly wasn't a group decision, but if you're getting back together you do it as a group.
Maybe the reunion will be announced prior to the DIY conference and then he can discuss the decision. |

Holy fucking shit, mun chien, bless you. I had no fucking idea. This will spur even more anger once I pass this info along to my husband.

i know this isn't the propper topic but what the hell.
Jello Biafra was a role model for me as a teenager.when finally i got to meet him live and face to face he was the coolest person ever.one that prefers to stay in a fucking flat instead of selling off his cult status in the wave of punk revival.he fought and still fights again the establisment and one one that prefered a law suit of his ex bandmates to giving a punk classic to a multinational.i don't like all of his music yet i buy everything that alternative tentacles produces(music that goes from hip-hop to industrial) just to support free thinking.i'll mention that in certain moments AT was the only company that was willing to pubblish noam chomsky's books.keep checking him out.
ps:apl4eris did i ever mention that u are really cool?
