i'm afraid to say that i was more of a nirvana fan at the time and never gave the pixies a thought, recently i was given the surfer rosa cd as a gift and now i can't believe i missed this truly great band, this stuff still sounds really fresh, went out a got the missing albums and loved them as well, strange that i can't really listen to nirvana now as most of it just sounds so outdated, is frank blacks solo stuff pretty similar? |

Frank's solo stuff is not exactly similar.... there is far more of an eclecticism and a wider range of style than the Pixies had. His more recent work has been the most straightforward yet. I guarantee you, though, that if you love the Pixies and you give Frank's work ample time to sink in, you will realize that his solo/Catholics body of work is just as good if not better in some ways.
Then again, nothing will ever replace the Pixies. Not even solo Frank.

If you like Trompe Le Mond a lot, you'll more than likely love Frank Black self-titled as it sounds very similar. Teanager Of the Year is very different but in a good way and then it get's more different and now it's, like psychic twin said, pretty straight-forward Stones/Dylanesque rock and I like it a lot. But you definitely have to give it time to sink in as with the Pixies and probably more-so with his solo work

I find it amuzing to ask people who have never heard of the pixies when this pixies song was recorded just by how it sounds, they would never ever guess the eighties, or earily 90's because their music is so different it doesnt fall into either generations trends, u know the 80's sound etc..thats one of the reasons why the pixies were such a great band, their music doesnt age like other bands who fall into the trends of the era. |

That's why a lot of people who like the Pixies also listen to Sonic Youth. If it's timeless, it makes the band seem less like a passing fad. |

i've had different experiences than the champ. there's been times when i've been playing pixies music and have had people tell me to "turn off that 80's music." |

Surely they must have known it was the Pixies then, and therefore when it was recorded (even though they recorded just as much in the nineties)? Either that or they got lucky 'cos a lot of it really does sound as though it could have been recorded now, especially as so many bands today are ditching the latest recording technology in favour of a more 'back to basics' approach.
As for Frank's solo work, I don't really think you can place a time on that either, so give it a listen (many listens actually) and judge for yourself.

btw, Shakey...
I've noticed your sig. Donnie Darko is, like, the best movie ever. I've thought about starting a thread about it many a time, but have never actually done so. Well, now is as good a time as any, I guess...

Come On Pilgrim sounds very 80s...but Surfer Rosa is pretty shocking when you consider it was recorded in 1987. It sounds so fresh. I was in the same boat as you, hellboy. I was obsessed for Nirvana for the longest time, so of course I heard the Pixies name more than a dozen times. I finally picked up Surfer Rosa and was blown away after the second listen. Getting into the Pixies was such an experience, cause every album was completely different from the one before it (to me, at least)...it was such a great experience.

i'm quite sure that the people who have said it had never heard of the pixies except from me and would definitely not have known when the pixies were around. it was bossanova, though, which to me does have sort of an eighties vibe even though it was released in 1990. |

quiet true about the timeless quality, i really was quite shocked when i discovered that surfer rosa was actually released in the 80's, just goes to show what a top band the pixies were/are. |

well surfer rosa is just an awesomely amazing sounding record. old steve albini did a fantastic job on that one.
but gil norton definitely delivered more of a polished sound than steve, which did sound kinda 80's in the 80's and kinda 80's in the early 90's.
but it does age very very well. |

The production of Bossonova does sound abit 80s to me but that's the only album that gives me this feeling. |

Yup! Mr Albini has produced two of the greatest albums ever written - Surfer Rosa and In Utero. he did an excellent job on both!!! |

and still, Albini is an ass! A complete sucker, a great producer (well he's more an engineer), but according to Frank in the great Mojo article and according to Kurt Kobain in the book 'Come as you ARe' he's a mean man. Frank said:,,Steve didn't think the pixies were a good band, he did it for the money.''
asshole

he himself has said that he'll engineer any band that agrees to his price. I know of a band called Whisper in the Noise (they sound vaguely like Nine INch Nails, only more melodic), who got him to engineer their album
