I'm looking at buying a new guitar, and I've decided to buy a Fender Strat. But I can't decide on the standard model, or the Fat model (with extra/different pickups).
If you like harder-edged music, like the Pixies, than the double-coil/humbucker would be the way to go. Single coil pickups, the standard strat pickup, have a lower output and pick-up RF interference/hum at high volumes and/or at high levels of distortion. The advantage to single coil pickups is that they have a more "transparent" or "glassy" sound at lower volumes.
You can always buy an after-market humbucker (I like Seymour Duncan) for around 80-90 bucks, and replace the original single coil.
Thanks for the tips guys. Think I'll pick up a fat strat then. Theres no point in buying a standard and replacing the pickup, as a fat strat is only $100 more anyway.
I personally like the my standard strat.. if you want real humbucker tone I think you should get something other than a strat, but thats just my personal opinion. The important thing for you is to go play one and find out what you like.
