Hey all. I'm having immense difficulties trying to transfer files between two PCs using Windows XP on both. I went to the help center and did all the setup stuff but it simply doesn't seem to work. I really need to transfer these files but can't seem to establish a direct connection between the comps. I know a lot of you are computer savvy and thought you might be able to explain the process to me better than the computer can. I know it shouldn't be this hard but apparently I'm a complete idiot and can't follow a few simple instructions. I'm going out of my f%@&@n tree!!!!!! Please give a brother a hand. Thanks.

Anytime I've ever done it, I've just put the OS on the new system, and burnt CD's of personal what nots and files from the old system to be dropped into the new one. I've never messed with direct transfer from system to system...Im not that good. As far as software, it should be merely a matter of reinstalling stuff. All of this, of course, hinges on the hope that you have a CD Burner. If not, you should. If you don't have one in the old system, throw one in there, and just burn all the irreplacable files....Another thing you can possibly do is to physically take out your harddrive from the old system, and put it on an empty IDE in your new one. At that point, let the new system see that harddrive (don't forget to have the correct jumper settings...slave, master...) and just drag the files into the new comp's drive.

I've never done a direct connection before, but if both computers are yours, and if you use cable or DSL for your internet connection you may want to consider buying a router and kill a bunch of birds with just one stone. I'd also do a google search for websites on PC networking. Lots of them have step-by-step instructions for what you are already trying to do, and/or what you could do with a router, and there are also forums where you could post your question.

thanks for the replies. I have way too many files to burn and I've done google searches for better axplanations but no go :( I trust the users here to answer in a timely manner if they know how to do it; besides, I wouldn't know where else to ask:)
I have no idea what a router is. I can't believe it's this difficult; I thought it would be a simple connecting job.

There are a few options.
As someone suggested above, pull your old hard drive out of the one computer, and put it in the new one. This is the fastest, easiest, and best method overall. Interloper's instructions are pretty solid, I won't bother repeating them, but this is definitely what I'd do.
If, for some reason, that's not an option, you're still OK. If both have ethernet cards or ports (may be built into the motherboard), you can buy a crossover cable and network them, easy as pie. Or as someone else suggested, if you're using both in the house, a router and two normal cables works great too.
If that's not an option, you can get a null modem cable (a serial cable with a crossover) which connects to the serial ports and SOMEwhere in XP there's a shortcut to creating a network like that. Make sure you get the right type (9 or 25) or you'll be messing with adapters and it gets messy. This is really a last resort option since it's so slow and is generally a pain in the #$^@. You'd probably be better off burning to CDs at this point.
I hope that helps. Drop me an email if you want and I can elaborate on any of those.

Speaking of burning, Im dying for a DVD burning drive. Especially since I finally realized you can fit over four gigs on one disc.
Now that's just dreamy.

when last faced with this challenge, I went for the router. For 'scuter's benefit, a router is a smallish box that takes in multiple network connections and routes traffic between them. (I have been very happy with the Linksys Cable/DSL router & firewall. We literally plugged the cable modem into the appropriate port, and all our other machines into the other ports, and it just worked.
As for the crossover cable, that is good too but make sure you label it! This precludes the need for a router. I have had this scenario lead to much frustration due to the fact that it looks just like a regular network cable. Otherwise, great option.
And in case it is not intuitive, once the networking is done you can either share the source drive and map it as a network drive on the new system, or grab a freeware FTP setup (ftp server on the old box, ftp client on the new one).
Hope that helps!

So what did you end up doing to solve the problem, Chris? I have posted technical problems on this forum before but was unable to come up with an answer. I tried just about everything that everyone suggested. (The first one was trying to fix a replacement DVD drive, which should be simple, and the second was installing Linux.) Maybe I am just a dolt.

oh I just got a crossover connector. I thought the ethernet cord would do it but no connection could be established; the crossover cord worked like a charm.
